After Gaikwad’s ouster, his replacement, Ayush Mhatre, was tried as an opener. Rachin Ravindra also played as an opener in the early matches. However, nothing worked out for the Super Kings.

In IPL 2026, the Super Kings will witness a major change in their opening pair. Gaikwad and Samson are set to open for the team in the upcoming season. Skipper Gaikwad confirmed this in a chat with Star Sports.
Hence, Samson’s addition is set to provide a massive boost to CSK’s batting unit. The right-handed batsman gave a spectacular performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this month, finishing as India’s highest run-scorer.
He also slammed match-winning half-centuries in the semi-final and the final. With 321 runs in just five games, he was adjudged Player of the tournament.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni is also set to play another season in the IPL. Since Dhoni will take the wicket-keeper’s role, Samson is expected to play a pure batter. IPL 2026 will start on March 28 with the opening game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
