Explained: Who can apply for Indian Cricket Team's chief selector job
Currently, Former Indian Cricket Team opener Shiv Sundar Das is serving as the interim chairman of selectors.
After Chetan Sharma’s resignation in February this year, BCCI is now looking to fill the position of Chief Selector soon. They put out an advert on their BCCI seeking applications for the post of Chief Selector in India’s senior selection committee. Chetan Sharma was re-appointed earlier this year, after he was sacked in November 2022 by the board when India faced crushing defeats in two back-to-back World T20 tournaments. Later in a few months, Sharma was found in another controversy after a sting operation done by a media channel. Sharma made some shocking revelations about the Indian Cricket Team in the sting operation. Chetan Sharma served as chairman senior selection committee for 2 years, starting his tenure in December 2020.
Who can apply for the role?
According to the BCCI constitution, they have put some criteria in selecting the members and chairman of the selection committee for every panel. The main aim of the selection committee is to pick the best possible players for the Indian side playing in Tests, ODIs, T20s, or playing in any other format. To become the national chief selector a candidate must have experience of 7 Tests or 30 First-class matches or 10 ODIs, and 20 First-class games in his career. The candidate should have retired from international cricket for at least 5 years before applying for the position. No person who has been a member of any cricket committee for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of the selection committee.
Criteria to apply for being a member of the national selection committee
1 - Should've retired from the game at least 5 years previously.
2 - Should've played 7 Test matches; OR Should've played 30 First Class matches; OR Should've played 10 ODIs and 20 First Class matches.
3 - No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations of BCCI) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of Men’s Selection Committee.
BCCI will accept applications for the role of Chief Selector post by 6 PM on 30th June. After the screening process of applications, shortlisted candidates will call for an interview with BCCI’s Cricket advisory committee. CAC will then evaluate the candidates based on their experience, and interview to decide on the final name to replace Chetan Sharma. Currently, Shiv Sundar Das is heading the role as interim chairman, along with him Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee, and Sridharan Sharath are part of the national senior selection panel. The next selection panel’s challenge will be to pick the best squad for the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023 in the coming three-four months.
