Who is Ayush Mhatre? All you need to know about CSK's new 17-year-old signing

Ayush Mhatre has replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad in CSK squad for IPL 2025.

Ayush Mhatre, a right-handed batsman, has joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as replacement for injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK acquired Mhatre for INR 30 lakhs as Gaikwad’s replacement after the regular skipper got ruled out of remainder of the tournament with elbow fracture.

Notably, Gaikwad was the skipper of CSK in IPL 2025. However, after his ouster from the tournament, MS Dhoni has taken over as captain of the side for remainder of the season. Dhoni also led the Men in Yellow to their second victory of the tournament in their last match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The five-time champions have played seven games in the season so far, winning only two of them. As of now, the Super Kings are the worst performers in the season. They are placed 10th in IPL 2025 points table with four points.

Who is Ayush Mhatre?

Ayush Mhatre is a native of Mumbai. He is a 17-year-old youngster who plays for Mumbai Team in Indian domestic circuit. He is a right-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm off-spinner.

He has played nine First-Class (FC) matches and seven List A games for Mumbai so far. He has piled up 504 runs in his FC career at an average of 31.50, including two centuries and one half-century. In his List A career, the right-handed batsman has slammed 458 runs at a batting average of 65.42.

The Mumbai player went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah in November last year. However, he later caught the attention of CSK talent scouts during mid-season trials at Chepauk earlier this month. At that time, he was part of BCCI’s Under-19 zonal camp in Rajkot and flew to Chennai for the trials.

Mhatre also impressed with his brilliant show in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this year. Mhatre showed an impeccable batting form in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. He ended up as the highest run-getter for Mumbai in the tournament with 458 runs.

He shattered a stunning knock of 181 in a clash against Nagaland, which was the highest individual score in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. Bowling off-spin, he also clinched seven wickets across four games in the tournament. Mhatre also arrived with a good batting show for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, hitting 471 runs in 14 innings with a top knock of 176.
