Gurnoor Brar has been picked in India’s Test and ODI squad vs Afghanistan.
India are set to lock horns with Afghanistan in a one-off test and three-match ODI series next month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squads for both campaigns.
Shubman Gill will captain India in both series, while KL Rahul has been appointed as the new vice-captain in tests. Rishabh Pant has been retained in the Test team but dropped from the ODIs.
Devdutt Padikkal has returned to the Test team after more than a year. Similarly, Ishan Kishan has returned to the ODI setup after a gap of one and a half years. A few uncapped players have also earned their maiden call-up in the series.
Uncapped pacer Gurnoor Brar has been included in both the Test and ODI squads and would make his national debut against Afghanistan. In the absence of pacers like Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah, Brar is highly expected to get an opportunity in the playing XI.
Who is Gurnoor Brar?
Gurnoor is a 25-year-old right-arm pacer from Punjab. He has impressed with his performance in domestic cricket. Shubman Gill noticed him during the India U19 setup and helped him break into the district team.
Later, Brar progressed to the Punjab U23 side. He made his List A debut in 2021 and his first-class debut in the following year.
In domestic cricket, Brar has played 18 first-class matches, claiming 52 wickets at an average of 27.30. In 9 List A games, he has picked 12 wickets at an average of 39.0. He has also played for India A.
In IPL 2023, he joined the Punjab Kings as a net bowler and was later signed as an injury replacement. He also made his debut but was later ruled out due to an injury.
After spending a year as a net bowler with the Gujarat Titans, he was signed by the franchise for INR 30 lakh in IPL 2025 and retained for the 2026 season. However, he is yet to play his first game for the side.
