Mitchell Owen replaced Glenn Maxwell in PBKS squad for remainder of IPL 2025.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen has joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Due to a fractured finger, veteran Glenn Maxwell was unable to compete in the event; Owen took his place.

The setback adds to Maxwell’s disappointing season, as he only scored 48 runs in seven games this year, including six single-figure totals. He was hurt before the PBKS’ rainout match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on April 26.

The IPL confirmed the development via a statement: “Punjab Kings have picked all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger.”

The 23-year-old Tasmanian, a powerful right-handed batter and seam-bowling option, has been signed for INR 3 crores. In 34 T20s, Mitchell Owen has scored 646 runs at an average of 25.84 and a strike rate of 184.57 with two centuries to his name. He’s also a handy medium pacer with 10 wickets to his name at an average of 9.63.

Who is Mitchell Owen?

Mitchell James Owen, born on September 16, 2001, is renowned for his menacing presence at the crease and his ability to use force to establish boundaries. He is a promising T20 asset because of his aggressive attitude, lengthy levers, and useful bowling.

Mitchell Owen is anticipated to join PBKS after completing his obligations with the Peshawar Zalmi in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025. Although the 23-year-old has not yet represented Australia in any format, he has proven to be a potent hitter in T20 cricket.

Mitchell Owen made his T20 debut in the 2020–21 Big Bash League (BBL), although he didn’t gain much attention until the 2024–25 season. He gave it his all when playing for the Hobart Hurricanes, amassing 452 runs at a strike rate of 203.60 and an average of 45.20 in 11 games.

He scored the first century of the BBL 2024-25 season against the Perth Scorchers with an incredible unbeaten innings of 101 runs off 64 balls. Owen’s performance in the BBL 2024-25 final was astounding; in one of the most thrilling innings, he hammered 108 runs off just 42 balls. Owen’s assault featured six boundaries and an incredible eleven sixes, and he batted with an incredible strike rate of 257.
