Sachin Dhas made 96 in India’s U19 World Cup 2024 semi-final win over South Africa.

Though Uday Saharan walked away with the Player of the Match trophy after India defeated South Africa in the first semi-final of the ongoing ICC U19 World Cup 2024, the spotlight was on young Sachin Dhas. The duo of Saharan and Dhas added 171 runs for the fifth wicket after India were reduced to 30 odd for 4 in a chase of 245 runs.

Sachin Dhas came to the crease when India were 32 for 4, and played a brilliant knock. He scored 96 off 95 balls and changed the dynamics of the match. The 19-year-old missed out on his second consecutive hundred of the tournament, having previously hit 116 (101) in India’s last group game against Nepal in Bloemfontein.

He played the role of the aggressor hitting 11 fours and 1 six, while Saharan, the Indian captain took the anchor role. Saharan made 81 runs as India won by 2 wickets to qualify for the final for the ninth time.

Who is Sachin Dhas?

Sachin Dhas hails from Beed, Maharashtra, and astonished everyone with his six-hitting ability at an invitational U-19 competition in Pune. The teenager’s six-hitting startled the organizers, who even examined the size of his bat to rule out foul play.

Sachin’s father, Sanjay Dhas, named him after the famous Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who is his second favorite player after Sunil Gavaskar. India’s U19 World Cup hero Sachin Dhas’ father revealed that Dhas wears No. 10 jersey because he adores Tendulkar and is a huge fan of the legend.

“I turned 51 today. Tomorrow is Sachin’s birthday; he will be 19. This day and this moment will never come again in our lives. This is the best gift a son can give to his father. It’s kind of a double delight or triple since we will celebrate his birthday on Saturday.

I am a big Sunil Gavaskar fan but I named him after my second favorite, Sachin Tendulkar so that growing up he could connect with him. Abhi iska generation Gavaskar sir ko kya samjhega (This generation might not understand Sunil Gavaskar). He wears No 10 because he adores Tendulkar,” Sachin Dhas’ father Sanjay told Indian Express.

Sanjay also built a turf wicket for his son using borrowed funds and had to call a water tanker every two or three days to water the pitch. Sachin’s father Sanjay also praised Sachin’s childhood coach, Azhar, for his tireless work with his son.

Sachin Dhas’ first act into the mainstream came in the 2023 Maharashtra Premier League (MPL), where he played for the Kedar Jadav-led Kolhapur Tuskers.

The right-hander is currently the U19 World Cup’s third-highest run scorer, with 294 runs from six innings at an average of 73.50 and a strike rate of 116.66.
