Mohsin Naqvi took Asia Cup 2025 trophy with him

After weeks of full entertainment, Asia Cup 2025 concluded on Sunday, 28th September. India, who were by far the best team in the tournament, ended up winning it. They defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by five wickets in the final in Dubai to lift their ninth title.

While, it was a mouth-watering final to witness, the conclusion of the tournament was host to yet another India-Pakistan controversy. It’s fair to say that the final would have been incomplete without it as the two nations left no stone unturned in giving it to each other throughout the tournament.

The presentation was delayed by around one hour and the main reason behind that was the Pakistan players. The Salman Agha-led side didn’t want to attend it, but later came and then another massive controversy unfolded as the winners, India, didn’t get the trophy.

Who is Mohsin Naqvi and why did the Indian Cricket Team refuse to take Asia Cup 2025 trophy from him?

The main culprit of that controversy after the final was none other than Mohsin Naqvi. Currently holding the post of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, Naqvi is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and is one of the ministers in the current Pakistan government.

With him being strongly associated with Pakistan politically, this was the main reason why Indian players decided not to take the trophy from him. Notably, Indian players right from the start of the tournament maintained a distance from the Pakistan players. There were also no handshakes between teams as well along with no photo sessions.

As Indian players didn’t take the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, he came up with a shocking act. The ACC chairman took the trophy away with him as Indian players didn’t get to touch the thing they won without losing a single game in the tournament.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia also shared his take on the same. He revealed why they didn’t take the trophy from Naqvi, adding that they will take strict action against the PCB chairman’s actions. Speaking to ANI, he said:

We have decided not to take the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan. So we decided not to take it from him but that does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy with him, along with the medals so it is very unfortunate and we hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible.

“There is an ICC conference in November in Dubai. In the next conference, we are going to launch a very serious and very strong protest against the act of the ACC chairperson”.

Indian players, however, were unfazed by not getting the trophy. They celebrated without it and even posted the pictures on social media with emojis of a trophy. Indian players and support staff were awarded INR 21 crores by the BCCI after winning the tournament.
