Afghanistan are at the third spot in Asia Cup 2025 group B points table with two wins in two games.
With all eyes on Dubai for one of the most anticipated group matches between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on Thursday, September 18, Asia Cup 2025 has reached an exciting point. The stakes are a spot in the Super Four stage.
The reigning T20I Asia Cup champions, Sri Lanka, have approached their campaign with tactful discipline. After consecutive victories, they lead group B with four points and a robust net run rate of +1.546. While their diverse bowling attack has performed admirably at pivotal times, their batting has flourished on consistency at the top and poise in the middle overs.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, have displayed signs of increasing might. They faced a defeat against Litton Das’s Bangladesh by a slim margin of eight runs after thrashing Hong Kong in their opening match by 94 runs. With two points and the best net run rate of +2.150 among the three teams in the group, they are now in third place.
Explained: Who will qualify for Super Four from Group B if Afghanistan beats Sri Lanka?

Afghanistan must win in order to advance to the Super Four; otherwise, Bangladesh will advance before them. All Sri Lanka needs to do is not get defeated by a massive margin.
For instance, if Sri Lanka bat first and score 150, Afghanistan would need to chase that total down in 11.4 overs to eliminate Sri Lanka and send Bangladesh to the Super Four with them. Sri Lanka would need to score 84 runs or fewer for Bangladesh to qualify if Afghanistan batted first and reached 150.
In essence, Afghanistan must win. Ideally, Bangladesh want Sri Lanka to prevail. But if Sri Lanka loses, Bangladesh needs them to lose by a huge margin.
When India play Oman in a dead rubber on September 19, the group stage will come to an end. This year’s Asia Cup final will take place on September 28 after the Super Four stage, which takes place from September 20 to 26.
