Jay Shah served as BCCI secretary from 2019 to 2024.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to undergo a significant transition as Jay Shah officially took over the role of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1.
Jay Shah served as the BCCI secretary from 2019 to 2024 and is widely credited with shaping the modern era of Indian cricket. Under his leadership, India hosted the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. He also promoted Women’s cricket in India by introducing the revolutionary Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.
As the ICC chairman Shah will now oversee global cricketing operations. His departure from the BCCI has created a vacuum in the secretary role.
Who has replaced Jay Shah as acting secretary of the BCCI ?
While names such as Gujarat’s Anil Patel and DDCA president Rohan Jaitley were reportedly considered, Assam’s Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the BCCI’s acting secretary.
Devajit Saikia, the current BCCI joint-secretary and a former First-Class cricketer from Assam, will now serve as the acting secretary of the BCCI.
The announcement was made by BCCI president Roger Binny, who used his constitutional authority to delegate the secretarial responsibilities to Saikia until a permanent appointment is made next year.
In a letter addressed to Saikia, Binny cited Clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution, to hand the secretarial powers to Saikia, who is also the Advocate General of Assam.
“The president shall, in the event of vacancy or indisposition, delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases.“
“Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb,” Binny wrote in his letter.
