Akeal Hosein delivered a sensational spell against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, picking four wickets for 17 runs.
The El Clasico of the Indian Premier League (IPL) pits the five-time champions against each other, with a lot at stake for both teams, particularly for the Mumbai Indians (MI), who are now in do-or-die territory. Both teams arrive on the back of a defeat.
MI displayed an improved batting performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), posting 243, but their poor bowling and fielding led to the target being chased down comfortably, with an over to spare. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), meanwhile, struggled to put on a big score on a batting friendly wicket, and the Gujarat Titans (GT) managed to chase down the target easily.
A loss for MI here would certainly dent their chances to qualify for playoffs. For CSK though, they still have an opportunity to join the race for the playoffs, should they win this match.
An high stakes encounter is underway, as MI take on CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) in Chennai. Hardik Pandya chose to bat first after winning the toss, and CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that he too would have batted first, had he won the toss.
Why did Akeal Hosein miss CSK vs MI clash of IPL 2026?

CSK surprised everyone when they announced that Akeal Hosein will miss the fixture, despite his heroics against MI when these two sides met previously. The West Indian all-rounder had picked four massive wickets, and dashed MI’s hopes to chase down CSK’s daunting target in the powerplay itself.
With only two left-handers in MI’s top-six, playing against Akeal would have certainly been a challenging task for the Mumbai Indians batters. He missed the clash due to team combination. Interestingly, CSK entered the field with only 3 overseas players. While Akeal is part of their impact player options, he is unlikely to feature in the team.
Instead of Akeal, Prashant Veer returned to the playing XI. CSK had gone all out to acquire Veer in the auction, but the Indian uncapped player is yet to justify his price tag. He bowled in the IPL for the first time in the powerplay, but Ryan Rickelton smashed him for three sixes in the same over.
Why did Akeal Hosein miss the CSK vs MI match?
CSK opted not to include him in the playing XI, likely due to team combination and overseas player balance, despite his strong previous performance.
Who replaced Akeal Hosein in the lineup?
Prashant Veer was brought into the XI, with CSK going in with only three overseas players.
