Akeal Hosein has not been a consistent starter for CSK despite making excellent contributions whenever given the chance.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) enter Match No. 59 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with their hopes of making the playoffs well and truly alive. Recent results including the win for the Mumbai Indians (MI) against Punjab Kings (PBKS) have completely opened up the race, and the Yellow Army is certain to finish in the top four if they win all of their remainder matches.

While CSK can still afford one defeat out of their next three matches, it would then potentially bring in Net Run Rate into the equation. Additionally, they play SRH and GT next, both who are in good form and favourites to make the playoffs.

LSG, meanwhile, are already eliminated, and will be looking to play for pride, with nothing to lose. This could further motivate them to bring their best against the team which had beaten them just five days back, in Chennai.

The reverse fixture between CSK and LSG is being played at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. LSG’s home ground has produced spicy pitches, with bowlers enjoying movement, pace and bounce, making it a mouth-watering battle between bat and ball.

Keeping the conditions in mind, CSK decided to drop Akeal Hosein from the team for this clash, and instead have decided to opt for the extra pace of Gurjapneet Singh. However, they also have the option of bringing in Matt Henry as the impact player, should the pitch continue to seam and swing.

“Yes, we’ve got a couple of changes. Spencer Johnson makes his debut and Gurjapneet comes in for Akeal as well”, said captain Sanju Samson after the toss.

Akeal Hosein has had a decent IPL so far, with his best outing coming against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, when he picked a stunning four-wicket haul to silence the home team. Overall, he has six wickets to his name, from the four matches he has played in.

CSK’s Playing XI vs LSG

Sanju Samson (WK), Ruturaj Gaikwad(C), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Prashant Veer, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Spencer Johnson, Mukesh Choudhary

Impact Player Options: Gurjapneet Singh, Akeal Hosein, Sarfaraz Khan, Matthew Short, Matt Henry.

While Akeal is listed in the impact player options, it is unlikely that he will return to the field as the 12th player. Instead he might be brought in as a temporary fielder, in case one of the listed players gets injured, or needs a break.

Why did Akeal Hosein miss the CSK vs LSG match?

Akeal Hosein was left out due to pitch conditions favoring fast bowlers and CSK’s preferred team combination.

Can Akeal Hosein still play in the match?

Yes, he is available among CSK’s impact player options, though his return appears unlikely.
