Dasun Shanaka’s run out drama was the major talking point of IND vs SL clash in Asia Cup 2025.
The Indian Cricket Team and the Sri Lankan Cricket Team were involved in the best match of Asia Cup 2025. In what was the last match of the Super Four stage, where India defeated Sri Lanka in the Super Over at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
Both India and Sri Lanka ended up getting 202/5 with the match going into the Super Over. The Super Over was also full of drama as well with Sri Lanka batting first. Dasun Shanaka, who was among the batters who batted for his side, got run out but despite that, he wasn’t given out.
Arshdeep Singh bowled a wide yorker to Dasun Shanaka, who missed it and immediately took off for a run. Sanju Samson, behind the stumps, threw the ball at the wickets and the Sri Lanka batter was well short of his crease. The players started walking off but the umpires called them back and Shanaka was deemed not out.
This is because after the run out happened, Arshdeep Singh appealed for caught behind and that was considered before the run out. Shanaka referred the decision upstairs to the third umpire Masudur Rahman and the DRS revealed that there was no bat involved and umpire overturned his decision.
Why was Dasun Shanaka not given out despite getting run out in the Super over against India?

The MCC law states that “the ball will be deemed to be dead from the instant of the incident causing the dismissal”. And in Dasun Shanaka’s case, the incident was the caught-behind appeal, meaning that the ball was already dead when Samson ran him out.
Thankfully that didn’t cost India much as he got out on the next ball. Sri Lanka managed just two runs in the Super Over, which India chased on the first ball and ended the league and Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2025 undefeated.
Sharing his take on the drama surrounding Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya said:
“According to the rules, if you appeal for the catch, then Dasun could go up to the third umpire. It was the first decision that always counted, not the second. So he went for the referral, and it was not out. That’s what happened. But overall, I think there are a few grey areas [in terms of the rules at large] that they [officials] have to finetune a bit.”
