Why is Jamie Overton not playing tonight’s LSG vs CSK clash of IPL 2026?

After playing against each other less than a week ago, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) take on each other in the reverse fixture of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. An Urvil Patel special innings helped CSK register a win against LSG, which also resulted in LSG’s elimination.

Josh Inglis returned to the team and smashed a quick-fire half-century, however, the middle-order failed to utilise the foundation setup by the openers, eventually finishing the innings at 203. Despite Patel’s heroics, CSK managed to complete the chase in the final over, as they lost a flurry of wickets in the end.

A win today for the five-time champions is a must, considering their path to the playoffs has opened up following Punjab Kings’ poor recent form. However, a defeat for CSK today, could complicate their path as they will take on their two fellow playoff rivals, in their final two matches.

Why did Jamie Overton miss LSG vs CSK clash of IPL 2026?

Jamie Overton, the England fast-bowling all-rounder, had been in sensational form in this IPL 2026 season. Overton made a huge impact for CSK ever since he returned to the playing XI, scoring 136 runs at an average of 34 and picking 14 wickets in 10 matches.

Moreover, against LSG in their previous battle, Overton had claimed three crucial wickets, including those of Josh Inglis, captain Rishabh Pant and Akshat Raghuwanshi. However, ahead of this reverse clash, CSK announced that Overton has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, due to a right thigh injury.

This is a huge blow for CSK, who continue to lose players due to injuries. Moreover, Overton is a player who offers various skillsets, making him irreplaceable. In his absence, Australia’s Spencer Johnson made his debut for CSK.
