Mohammad Nabi got out for five runs in the clash against South Africa, which Afghanistan lost in the second Super Over.

Afghanistan lost to South Africa in the 13th match of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Wednesday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking their second straight defeat in the tournament. In the clash, Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi was fined 15% match fee and one demerit point.

The encounter was the most thrilling one in the tournament so far, with two Super Overs. After being asked to bat first, South Africa piled up 187/6 in the first innings. Quinton de Kock (59) and Ryan Rickelton (61) scored stunning half-centuries.

However, the total was not enough as Afghanistan matched it with a half-century by Rahmanullah Gurbaz (84). Other batters played crucial cameos to keep the fight till the last ball; however, they also ended with 187/10.

The first Super Over ended in a tie with both teams scoring 17 runs. In the second Super Over, Proteas piled up 23 runs and eventually won the game by halting Afghanistan at 19/1.

The two super overs in the match grabbed the attention of the spectators, but another incident that made headlines was Nabi’s argument with the on-field umpires.

In the 14th over of Afghanistan‘s batting, Nabi engaged in a prolonged argument with the umpires over Lungi Ngidi’s wristband. Taking objection to the umpire’s decision, he breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

“Nabi was found to have breached Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match,” ICC said in an official statement.

The veteran Afghan all-rounder admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Gilbert of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Hence, there was no need for a formal hearing in the matter.

He was fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point as this was his first offence in the past 24 months.
