Why is MS Dhoni not playing CSK vs LSG clash of IPL 2026?

MS Dhoni has not played any game for CSK in IPL 2026 so far.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are taking on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 53rd match of the Indian Premier League 2026. The encounter got underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

While CSK take the sixth spot in the points table with 10 points, LSG are stranded in last place with 6 points. They need to outplay Chennai to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to field first in the clash. He informed that they have made no changes to their playing XI. Hence, MS Dhoni was once again absent from their side. He has not featured in any games in the tournament so far.

Why is MS Dhoni absent from the CSK vs LSG clash?

MS Dhoni has recovered from his calf injury but is still working on his fitness. He had suffered a calf injury before the start of the season. Since then, there have been regular updates about his recovery. The franchise has not given a proper update on the exact reason for his absence.

The wicket-keeper batsman is participating in practice sessions. Earlier, it was said that he is working on running between the wickets. Some reports also suggested that Dhoni had cleared fitness tests, but he and the team decided not to disturb the winning combination.

While he has been training regularly with the squad, there is still no clear answer about his return to the playing XI.

Recently, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey informed that Dhoni is working on his running between the wickets and is expected to play soon. Sanju Samson has taken the wicket-keeping duties in Dhoni’s absence.

Speaking at the toss, Gaikwad said, “We’re going to bowl first. The simple reason, the wicket has been covered for a while and there was a rain around as well, so nothing special. It is just that everyone is really positive. Everyone is really eager to turn it around and just try and keep it just as simple as possible. We are playing with the same team”.
