Explained: Why cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli lost 'Blue Tick' on Twitter

Major cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and others lost their verified 'Blue Tick' on their twitter profiles.

Many sportspersons and other people from around the world lost their verification ticks on the leading social media platform Twitter on Thursday. Indian cricketers, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni are a few names on the list. Since the assumption of the office by Elon Musk, Twitter has gone through a few revamps, of which the process to remove ‘legacy verified ticks’ from Twitter accounts is the latest one. The new verification process requires the users to pay a monthly subscription fee to get 'Twitter Blue'.

Musk said in November that Twitter will start processing a fee of $8 in order to generate more revenue streams for the company. The company also offered the authentic mark in different colors - gold for businesses and gray for government and multilateral organizations and officials. It has also started displaying labels like "state-affiliated" and "automated by" against accounts to show when an account is linked to a government or is a bot.

Under Musk's ownership, Twitter has changed how it hands out the coveted blue checkmarks that were earlier given to noted individuals, journalists, executives, politicians, and establishments after verifying their identities. They served as a mark of authenticity.

In the saga of Elon Musk's Twitter game, the company has seen many changes ever since his arrival. Taking the company a step ahead in commercializing its business, Musk recently announced the subscription structure for getting the 'Blue Tick' on Twitter profiles. Unlike previously, the users will have to pay a defined amount, in this case, $8 in order to get their profiles verified. The amount will be paid monthly.

Following the news, many Indian cricketers lost their 'Blue Tick' on Twitter. Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni are the big names who lost their verification. Interestingly, it wasn't just limited to Indian cricketers; one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo also lost his ‘tick’ on the platform.
