Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, started their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign with a narrow win over the Gujarat Titans. The match was played in New Chandigarh and went down to the wire. Punjab chased down a target of 163 runs with just five balls to spare.
Young Australian batter Cooper Connolly was the star of the night. He scored an unbeaten 72 runs and guided Punjab under pressure. His calm innings helped Punjab recover after a sudden middle-order collapse.
Earlier, Punjab bowlers performed brilliantly and restricted Gujarat to 162 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal and Vyshak Vijayakumar shared five wickets. Despite some late drama in the chase, PBKS secured two important points to begin their season on a positive note.

After the match, the IPL governing body fined Shreyas Iyer INR 12 lakh. The penalty was handed because Punjab Kings maintained a slow over-rate during the game. This was confirmed in an official IPL statement released after the match.
As per Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, teams must complete their overs within the given time. Since this was PBKS’ first offence of the season, only the captain was fined. Iyer had also faced similar penalties in the previous season, including a bigger fine for repeat offences.
Despite the fine, Punjab had plenty to celebrate. They were cruising at 110 for two before a sudden collapse saw them slip to 118 for six. Gujarat’s impact player Prasidh Krishna played a key role in that phase with a brilliant spell.
However, Connolly held his nerve and stitched crucial partnerships with Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett. His match-winning knock ensured PBKS crossed the line. Iyer and his team will now look to improve their over-rate in the upcoming games while carrying forward the winning momentum.
Punjab will next lock horns with Chennai Super Kings on April 3. The match will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from 7:30PM IST.
