3 reasons why Suryakumar Yadav should play at No. 3 in Super 8 round of T20 World Cup 2026

India are gearing up for the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026. The Suryakumar Yadav & Co. have been unbeaten in the tournament so far, winning four games in a row in the league stage. They finished in the top spot in the Group A points table with eight points to book a berth in the second round.

The Men-in-Blue have done a marvellous job in bowling, keeping their opposition away from big totals or targets in all four games. However, they have not made a mark with their batting. They only crossed the 200-run mark once, despite playing three encounters in India and facing three associate nations.

Moreover, India also suffered batting collapses and struggled to showcase impeccable teamwork. Wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan and skipper Suryakumar are the highest run-scorers for the side, but they still need to strengthen their batting department.

Since SKY owns an impressive form at present, he could move up the order to solve the team’s batting woes. On that note, below are three reasons why Suryakumar Yadav should play at No. 3 in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Reasons Suryakumar Yadav should bat at No.3-

3. Surya’s superb form

After Ishan Kishan, Surya is the only batter who has impressed with his consistent form in the tournament. With one half-century at an average of 54.0, the right-handed batsman has scored 162 runs, striking the ball at 136+.

He also hammered an unbeaten 84-run knock against the USA, rescuing the team from a big batting collapse. With his stunning form, he has added prowess to India’s top order.

2. Tilak Varma’s batting struggles

Tilak Varma recovered from his injury just ahead of the T20 World Cup and also showed a wonderful form in the warm-up game against South Africa. However, he has struggled to score runs across four games so far while batting at the No.3 position.

The left-handed batsman has registered scores of 25, 25, 25, and 31, failing to smash even a half-century. Hence, Suryakumar can do a better job at one-down situation.

1. Provide a strong start to India in Powerplay

Since openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have lost their wickets early, India have struggled to get powerful starts in the Powerplay overs in the last 4 matches.

Even one-down Varma has not batted at his full potential. In such a scenario, in-form batter Suryakumar can rise India’s run-rate in the first six overs if he plays at No. 3.
