Tilak Varma, T20 World Cup 2026

Tilak Varma has been batting at No. 3 for India in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Tilak Varma has a key role to play in India’s batting unit because he bats at No. 3 in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, the left-handed batsman has failed to perform to his full potential in the tournament so far.

The 23-year-old has featured in all four games but has not scored a half-century in any match. His scores read 25, 25, 25, and 31, which justifies his inability to convert decent starts into a big knock.

Despite Varma’s batting struggles, Suryakumar Yadav & Co. have won all four matches in the league stage. Topping the Group A points table, they have booked a berth in the Super 8 round. Unlike the league stage, India will face stronger teams in the Super 8, and Varma needs to regain his form.

On that note, below are three reasons why Tilak Varma‘s batting woes are a big concern for India ahead of Round 2 in the T20 World Cup 2026.

3. Inability to Score vs Spinners

Varma is an impressive batter against pacers and also dominates them, smacking boundaries and sixes. However, he struggles to score with a similar style against spinners.

This creates an issue as he battles to score runs at a high strike rate in the middle-overs. This also puts pressure on the lower-order batsmen despite their excellence against spin.

2. Struggle to Score in Power Play

In all games in the T20 World Cup so far, Varma had to come early at the crease as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson lost their wickets soon. As a result, he had to play in the power-play overs.

However, he has struggled to smash runs at a high strike rate in the first six overs, which has restricted India from getting quickfire starts. Moreover, he has lost his wicket without a big score in all games and has been unable to utilise the powerplay overs.

1. Failing to Shift Gears

Varma has faced issues changing gears while batting in the T20 World Cup. In all of his innings, he could not increase his strike rate after playing the first 20 deliveries. He has played 88 deliveries across four games and owns a strike rate of 120.45.

Batting at number three, he needs to increase his tempo in the middle-overs. His inability to do the same can put the team under pressure against big rivals in the Super 8 round. Moreover, the pressure on the lower-order can hamper India’s ability to reach mammoth totals in the death overs.

How many runs has Tilak Varma scored in the Group Stage of the T20 World Cup 2026?

Tilak has scored 106 runs in four games so far.

Tilak Varma bats at which position for India?

Tilak bats at the number three position for India in the T20 World Cup.
