Irani Cup 2024-25 will be played between Mumbai and Rest of India in October.

According to latest developments, the Irani Cup 2024-25, which was originally scheduled to be played in Mumbai, has been moved to Lucknow. Reigning Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai and Rest of India will face each other in the high-voltage clash from October 1 to October 5.

The Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final was played between Mumbai and Vidarbha, where Mumbai crushed Vidarbha by 169 runs at the Wankhede Stadium to win their 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

On the other hand, Rest of India defeated Saurashtra by a huge margin of 175 runs in the last season’s Irani Cup in Rajkot, where left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar picked a 10-wicket match haul in October 2023. The left-arm spinner was also awarded with the Player of the Match award.

Why is Lucknow hosting the Irani Cup 2024-24?

According to a latest report in ESPNcricinfo, the Irani Cup 2024-25 will be played in Lucknow instead of Mumbai due to weather conditions.

It is understood that Mumbai is going through an extended monsoon season and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn’t want the match to get washed away or affected due to rain. So, the board has shifted the venue to Lucknow due to logistical reasons.

The upcoming Irani Cup 2024-25 between Mumbai and Rest India will start on the final day of the Indian cricket team’s second test against Bangladesh in Kanpur. This means players who will be part of India’s test line-up won’t play the Irani Cup in October.

Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association secretary Arvind Kumar also confirmed that the Irani Cup 2024-25 will be held in Lucknow instead of Mumbai. Arvind Kumar further added that they are excited to host the elite domestic match between Mumbai and the Rest of India.

“This year’s Irani Cup match will be held in Lucknow and we are excited to host it,” Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) secretary Arvind Kumar Srivastava told ESPNcricinfo.
