Yashasvi Jaiswal left the field after scoring 104* runs in second innings of the 3rd test.
Currently India and England are engaged in the third of five-match test series at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The series is leveled at 1-1, with England winning in Hyderabad and India in Vishakapatnam.
Earlier on day 1 of the third test, India won the toss and opted to bat first. The experienced duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma together stitched a partnership of 204 runs after India were reduced to 33/3. Both Jadeja and Rohit smashed their respective centuries and helped India post 445 runs in the first innings.
After the end of day 2, Indian veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was forced to fly back to Chennai due to his mother’s illness on Friday, February 16.
However, spirited performance from Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, who picked up a four-wicket haul in England’s first innings, helped India bundle the visitors for 319 runs. With Siraj’s performance, India gained a massive lead of 126 runs.
India began batting before tea and lost skipper Rohit Sharma for 19 runs. Young batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill stepped up and stitched up a 155-run partnership for the second wicket, with the Indian opener Jaiswal smashing his third test ton.
Why did Yashasvi Jaiswal go off the field after scoring 104 runs?
Indian left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal started his second innings of the ongoing third test match with a watchful start. However, after reaching the half-century mark, Jaiswal started accelerating his innings and raced away to his third test century off just 122 balls. During his stay at the crease, Jaiswal hammered nine fours and five sixes.
Soon after reaching his ton, when Jaiswal was batting on 104 runs, he seemed to have some back issues, and he suddenly called the Indian team physio, who came out to the middle and checked a couple of times before Jaiswal decided to leave the field retired hurt. After Jaiswal left the field, Indian middle-order batter Rajat Patidar joined Shubman Gill at the crease.
Can Yashasvi Jaiswal bat again for India in the ongoing third test match?
According to MCC Law 25.4.2, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal can return to bat later in the innings.
“If a batter retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his/her innings,” states MCC Law 25.4.2.
However, it is to be noted that there is no official update provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in regards to the Yashasvi Jaiswal’s injury.
India ended on a high note at the end of day 3. India are 196/2 at stumps with a lead of 322 runs. India would look to pile as many as possible on day 4 and crush England’s hope of winning the third test match in Rajkot.
