India's tour of West Indies 2023
Explained: Why Yuzvendra Chahal was not allowed to go back to dressing room after stepping on field to bat in 1st T20I vs WI
In a funny incident, Yuzvendra Chahal was seen run in and out of the ground in the first T20I.
The first T20I match at Brian Lara Cricket Academy saw a bizarre incident happening on field that explains the chaos and confusion going on in Indian team management’s mind. The incident happen during the final over of the Indian chase. India lost their 8th wicket and Yuzvendra Chahal was supposed to come in next to bat. Chahal entered the ground and raced towards wicket. Soon after Chahal started walking back to dressing room and number 11 Mukesh Kumar was about to enter the playing field. Umpires intervened and they didn’t allowed Chahal to go back as he was the first to enter the playing field and come to bat.
Why Umpires didn’t allow Yuzvendra Chahal to go back?
According to the MCC rules, A batter after walking in to the playing area can not be replaced by any other batter. Indian team management tried to replace Chahal with Mukesh Kumar but Yuzvendra Chahal almost arrived at the wicket to face the bowler.
Umpires with the time restriction and MCC rulebook could not allow Chahal to go back in the dressing room and replace him with someone else in the batting order. The law of the game doesn’t allow a batter go back before he/she gets out to walk back to the dressing room. Chahal and Mukesh couldn’t change the result of the game and India lost the game by 4 runs.
Yuzvendra Chahal had a great game with the ball as he picked up 2 wickets in his 3 overs spell and conceded only 24 runs. Mukesh Kumar was on his debut and also bowled a great final over against West Indies. But all their efforts went useless as India’s batting looked under pressure against West Indies’ pace attack. Chasing 150, India didn’t start well and lost Shubman Gill in powerplay. Another debutant Tilak Verma was the only batter to score freely as he smashed 39 runs in 22 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes.
The incident also shows the confusion in Indian dressing room in decision making. Though both Chahal or Mukesh couldn’t have changed the result, but such incident proves no clarity in thoughts in the dressing room. Indian team management is already under fire for doing too many experiments in the entire West Indies tour so far. India and West Indies both will fly to Guyana to play 2nd T20I game.
