This is a do-or-die match for CSK.
In their last league match of the Indian Premier League 2026, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will collide at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 21.
The Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the playoffs. They take the second spot in the points table with 16 points. A victory against CSK will increase their chances of a top-two finish in the points table.
On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings now have very little chance of reaching the playoffs. If they defeat GT and a few other teams’ results go in their favour, they might secure a place in the top four. However, their chances are very slim as five teams are eyeing the last spot in the playoffs.
Will Chennai Super Kings be eliminated if they lose the GT vs CSK clash?

Yes, CSK will be officially eliminated from the tournament if they lose the clash against Gujarat. They are currently placed seventh in the points table with 12 points. Out of 13 matches, CSK have won six and lost seven.
If they lose tonight’s encounter, they will be stuck at 12 points at the end of the league stage. In such a scenario, Rajasthan Royals (14), Punjab Kings (13), and Kolkata Knight Riders (13) will have more points than Chennai.
On the other hand, if CSK win the clash, they will move to the fifth spot in the points table with 14 points, equal to RR. Later, if RR, PBKS, KKR, and DC lose their last match of the league stage, Chennai might make it to the playoffs provided they have a better Net Run Rate (NRR) than Rajasthan in the end.
Ruturaj Gaikwad & Co. are on the back foot after losing their previous clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets. They also suffered a big defeat against Gujarat by eight wickets earlier in the tournament.
