Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team in 2024 and is currently guiding them in the T20 World Cup 2026. After suffering a shocking ODI series loss against New Zealand at home in January, India have shown a wonderful form in the ongoing 20-team tournament that commenced on February 7.
The Suryakumar Yadav & Co. have won all three games in the tournament so far and qualified for the Super 8 round. They are the defending champions and aiming to win their third title in the T20 World Cup.
While Gautam Gambhir‘s tenure has been ineffective in the test format, he has achieved several successes in the white-ball tournaments. Last year, India won the ICC Champions Trophy by crushing New Zealand in the final. Now, they have followed up with their stunning show in the T20 World Cup 2026 this year.
Notably, Gambhir has a contract as India’s head coach till the end of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The campaign will take place in October and November in South Africa. Namibia and Zimbabwe are the co-hosts of the campaign.

Gambhir was offered the role of Indian head coach after his successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as mentor. He helped the team to win the title under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy in the 2024 edition. Now, according to reports, he has been offered a stint ahead of IPL 2026 by the Rajasthan Royals.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran journalist Abhishek Tripathi, the IPL 2008 champions have offered him three roles – partner, mentor, and CEO. One of the owners in the new RR management wants Gambhir to execute these three roles.
“A majority of Rajasthan Royals shareholders are selling their stake to the new owners. The deal is currently in a transferable state. One of the owners in RR’s new management has offered Gambhir a two-to-three per cent stake, in addition to the roles of CEO and mentor,” the report stated.
According to BCCI rules, Gambhir cannot hold dual roles in IPL and the governing body simultaneously. Since he has a contract till the end of the ODI World Cup 2027, he is highly unlikely to accept the role.
The IPL 2026 will start in the last week of March. Before joining KKR in IPL 2024, Gambhir was also the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2022 and 2023 and led them to the playoffs in both seasons.
