A washout in Galle could make India’s road to the ICC WTC 2-25-27 final even tougher.

The Indian Cricket Team is currently playing against Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series. The first Test is underway at the Galle International Stadium, Galle, and started on August 15. However, there have been a few rain interruptions that have impacted the game, and fans are wondering what would happen if the match gets washed out.

India are currently sitting fifth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table, and they need to finish in the top two to qualify for the ICC WTC Final. The team lost an important home series to South Africa last year by 0–2, which impacted their chances of making it to the WTC Final. However, there are still slim chances that the team might make it to the final if they win most of their remaining matches.

The Test team will next travel to New Zealand for a two-match Test series and then welcome Australia to their home for a five-match Test series. In home conditions, India have been dominant against Australia in the last few series. However, they are currently not as dominant at home, having lost Test series to New Zealand and then South Africa.

To strengthen their chances, they first need to win both the Sri Lanka Test matches, but there is a strong chance that the first Test could be washed out. On that note, let’s have a look at the scenario in which India could still qualify for the WTC Final even if the first Test ends in a washout.

India are currently in fifth position in the WTC points table with a win percentage of 48.15%. To make it to the WTC Final, they might have to win most of their remaining matches. They have nine matches left, and if they lose even a single one, they will have to depend on the results of other teams.

In the last cycle, the second finalist finished with a win percentage of 67.54%. Seven wins and two losses would take India to 62.96%, which is still comparatively lower. However, they would need some results to go in their favour. Eight wins and one loss would take them to 68.52%, which would most likely seal the deal.

However, if the first Test against Sri Lanka gets washed out, their percentage will decrease to 46.66%, making it even tougher for them to finish in the top two. They will have to win almost all of their remaining matches to make sure they qualify for the final. If they lose even a single match, they might have to pray for some other results to go their way.
