Jacob Bethell had smashed 105 runs off 48 balls against India in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) began their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season with a dominant win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). They will next face off against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who are desperate for a win. Unlike RCB who have got off to a quick start, CSK have found it tough going in the absence of their former captain MS Dhoni.

Injuries have plagued the Yellow Army resulting in them being unable to play their full strength playing XI so far. RCB on the other hand, boast a strong pool of players, to replace their potential first-choice players.

The void created by Josh Hazlewood’s absence was filled by Jacob Duffy, who broke the back of SRH’s formidable top order. On a ground where runs are scored quickly, CSK will need their bowlers to come to the party against Virat Kohli and company.

The RCB have a problem of plenty with their overseas contingent. Phil Salt is their designated opener at the top. He played a key role in helping RCB win their maiden title after 18 years. However, Salt has been going through a lean patch since the T20 World Cup 2026, and failed to get going against SRH as well last Sunday.

Salt finished the T20 World Cup with just 130 runs, going at an average of 16.25. He then fell to Jaydev Unadkat for 8 runs off 7 balls. In the break between the first and second match for RCB, the wicket-keeper was spotted training hard alongside RCB mentor Dinesh Karthik.

While it is certain that RCB will continue to back the English opener, they always have the option to replace him with Bethell in the future, should Salt’s poor form persist. Apart from Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd and Jacob Duffy were the overseas players for RCB’s first match.

Hence it is extremely difficult for Bethell to force his way into the playing XI as of now. Prior to the competition, Bethell impressed everyone at the T20 World Cup, where he most notably smashed a sensational ton against India’s quality bowlers in the semi-final at Wankhede. Despite ending in a losing cause, Bethell proved why he is so highly rated, and is a talent to watch out for in the future.

He is unlikely to feature due to overseas combination constraints in the RCB lineup.

What is the venue of RCB vs CSK clash?

The match will be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Can Bethell replace Phil Salt in the XI?

He could be considered if Salt’s poor form continues, but management is expected to back Salt for now.
