Joe Root is the highest run-getter for England in all World Cups.

England batter Joe Root shed light on his retirement rumours floating around after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 went on in India. England didn’t start their CWC campaign on a good note, losing to New Zealand in the tournament opener in Ahmedabad on October 5.

However, they won their second game against Bangladesh in Dharamshala and are currently facing Afghanistan in Delhi. However, the focus is on England players who are almost touching the age of thirty and whether they will move on from the game after this ODI World Cup tournament.

At the age of 32, time is on Root's side because he doesn't have any of the significant fitness difficulties that Ben Stokes went through.

“Retire? No. I’ll get pushed before that," says Joe Root

There are still concerns about the 50-overs game to be played in the near future, but with the 2027 edition already headed to be played at South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, the centerpiece competition doesn't seem to be disappearing anytime soon.

And Joe Root has planned to play in that marquee event.

“Yeah, I’d like to go on a safari!. I’d love to still be playing in four years’ time. The cricket landscape’s forever changing isn’t it, but I can’t see myself not being there unless I’m not good enough and guys have gone past me. Retire? No. I’ll get pushed before that,” Root was quoted by the Independent UK.

Root recently overtook Graham Gooch to become England’s highest run-getter in World Cups. Having passed his mark of 897 in the win over Bangladesh, Root became the first Englishman to reach the feat.

“It would be nice if we win a World Cup at the end of it, because we’d have two World Cups and I’d be the leading run-scorer. But, from a personal point of view, they’re all niceties. It’s got to stand for something and the only way it does is if we go on this thing, which we know we can,” he added.

Root has 6405 runs in 164 ODIs with 16 centuries at an average of 49.26 and a best of 133*.
