Matheesha Pathirana has not played a single game in IPL 2026 so far due to fitness concerns and availability.
The winless Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be looking to address their bowling concerns as they take on the Gujarat Giants (GT) in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter on Friday. With the tournament entering a competitive phase, team combinations and player availability have become a key talking point, particularly around their pace attack.
Among the names involving significant interest is Matheesha Pathirana, whose absence from the playing XI has raised questions. The Sri Lankan pacer, known for his unique slingy action and effectiveness in death overs, has not featured in the ongoing season despite being a high-profile buy in the auction.
Pathirana was signed by KKR for INR 18 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, highlighting the franchise’s intent to strengthen their pace department. However, his participation has been delayed due to fitness concerns.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play in GT vs KKR clash of IPL 2026?

The latest update suggests that Pathirana, despite receiving a NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket, is yet to join the squad, with ‘logistics’ still being finalised. As per various media reports, a KKR spokesperson confirmed that the franchise is currently working on completing the logistical arrangements for the Sri Lankan pacer. This means that he will miss GT vs KKR clash of IPL 2026.
KKR’s bowling attack has already been hit by injuries to key India players, including Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, forcing the team to rely on options such as Vaibhav Arora, Cameron Green, Blessing Muzarabani and Kartik Tyagi. Despite these players, the side has struggled to consistently take on opposition batters, especially in high-pressure phases of the innings.
The 23-year-old’s sling-arm action, often compared to Sri Lankan Legend Lasith Malinga, creates a difficult release angle for batters to read. This becomes effective especially in the death overs, an area where KKR have conceded heavily in the ongoing IPL 2026.
Whenever he joins the squad, Pathirana is expected to add much-needed control and variety to the bowling attack, potentially strengthening KKR’s chances in the latter stages of the tournament.
With KKR yet to register a win this season, the pressure is mounting on the team management to find the right combination quickly. The addition of a bowler like Pathirana would help address KKR’s death-bowling issues, which have cost them dearly in frustratingly close games.
