Will Pucovski made his test debut against India during the BGT series in 2021.
In a significant development in Australian cricket, batsman Will Pucovski’s cricketing journey is set to come to an unfortunate end after the medical team has recommended him to take retirement owing to the multiple head injuries and concussions he’s suffered in his career.
A batting prodigy, Pucovski earned his maiden test call-up for the Australia side in 2019. The 26-year-old featured for the Australian side only once. He made his during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2021 during the Sydney test.
On his test debut, the right-handed batter played a gritty knock of 62 runs against the Indian cricket team. But he suffered a shoulder injury on test debut and missed the Gabba test.
A medical assessment in 2022 found that some of Pucovksi’s head injuries were not concussions but instead stress and trauma responses, according to a report in Fox Sports.
He did return to action but suffered another concussion in March, which seemed to have proven the final straw.
Will Pucovski set to retire at the age of 26 for medical reasons
According to a report by Australian news outlet 9News Melbourne,” The (retirement) decision was made several months ago, but has only been formalized contractually by Cricket Victoria this week.”
“My understanding is that an independent panel of experts recommended Pucovski retire three months ago, and all that’s left is for Cricket Victoria and his team to formalise that contractually,” said a 9News reporter.
“The news doesn’t come as a surprise to teammates of Pucovski who haven’t seen him at training all pre-season, in fact he’s been travelling overseas.”
The 26-year-old Will Pucovski has played 26 First-Class matches and scored 2350 runs at an impressive average of 45.19. Pucovski registered seven centuries and nine half-centuries in FC cricket.
The star cricketer also scored 333 runs in 14 List A matches with one century and two fifties.
