Sanju Samson was Player of the Match in the semi-final against England.

Following his back-to-back half-centuries, Indian wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson will be in focus in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. The summit clash between India and New Zealand will take place on March 8 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Samson was initially overlooked as an opener in the T20 World Cup 2026, with the team backing Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. However, due to Abhishek’s continuous batting struggles and the pair’s inability to provide quickfire starts in Powerplay overs, Samson was chosen as an opener.

The right-handed batsman utilised the opportunity well and smacked match-winning half-centuries in the last two matches. His unbeaten 97 runs against West Indies in the Super 8 and quickfire 89 runs against England in the semi-final set the stage for India’s victories in both games.

In just four games, the wicket-keeper batter has scored 232 runs at an average of 77.33 and a strike rate of 201.73. Amid his fabulous form, he has a lot of responsibility in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. Indian cricket fans will expect him to deliver another match-winning performance and lead India to victory against the Black Caps.

Notably, Samson has not played any Test or ODI matches at Narendra Modi Stadium. He has featured in just one T20I match at this venue, which was against South Africa in December, 2025. He scored 37 runs as an opener in the encounter, which India won by 30 runs.

Samson’s T20I record in Ahmedabad-

  • Matches: 1
  • Innings: 37
  • Runs scored: 37
  • Average: 37.0
  • Strike rate: 168.18
  • Highest score: 37
  • Fifties: 0
  • Hundreds: 0

Samson’s IPL record in Ahmedabad-

The 31-year-old has a poor record in Ahmedabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring just 276 runs in 12 innings at an average of 25.09. This also includes one half-century.

  • Matches: 13
  • Innings: 12
  • Runs scored: 276
  • Average: 25.09
  • Strike rate: 133.33
  • Highest score: 60
  • Fifties: 1
  • Hundreds: 0

As per the above records, Samson is expected to struggle in the final against New Zealand. His batting average and strike rate are very low at the venue compared to his capabilities.

However, it is important to note that the Ahmedabad pitch is helpful for spinners, where batsmen often find it difficult to score many runs. Notably, Samson also struggled to score runs against New Zealand in the prior T20I series ahead of the World Cup. Therefore, Samson will face a big challenge against this opposition and the venue.

What is Sanju Samson’s record in Ahmedabad in T20Is?

Samson scored 37 runs in the only T20I game he played in Ahmedabad against South Africa in December 2025.
