Shreyas Iyer was fined INR ₹24 lakh fine for a slow over-rate during CSK vs PBKS game.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK and Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced off against each other at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on the night of April 3 in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team won the toss, elected to bat first and posted a big score of 209 for the loss of five wickets.
Ayush Mhatre was the star of the show with his 73 runs off 43 deliveries, which included six fours and five sixes. He stitched together a 96-run partnership with the captain before Sarfaraz Khan played an explosive knock of 32 runs off just 12 balls. Shivam Dube did the finishing job by scoring 45 runs off 27 balls to get the CSK total past 200.
Punjab Kings were confident right from the start of the run chase as the opener Priyansh Arya gave them an explosive start, which was later carried forward by his partner Prabhsimran Singh. Captain Shreyas Iyer played the exact kind of innings that was required off him, as he scored 50 runs off 29 balls with four boundaries and three sixes before being dismissed.
Even with a small wobble in the middle overs, PBKS stayed cool, as the experienced duo of Iyer and Nehal Wadhera kept things steady. PBKS wrapped up the chase with eight balls to spare, which became their second win in a row this season and their fourth straight victory at Chepauk. Priyansh Arya took home the Player of the Match award for his quick-fire 39 off 11 balls.
Shreyas Iyer fined ₹24 lakh fine for a slow over-rate

Once the dust had settled on the celebrations, however, the match officials delivered some bad news. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer was hit with a ₹24 lakh fine for a slow over-rate during the CSK clash, which was his second offence of the IPL 2026 season.
Under IPL rules, a second over-rate strike costs the captain ₹24 lakh, while every other player in the XI is docked ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.
Will Shreyas Iyer get banned for next match?
This means the entire PBKS squad, Impact Player included, felt the pinch alongside their skipper. Just three days ago, following the Gujarat Titans game on 31 March, Iyer had already been fined ₹12 lakh for his first slip-up under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
It is a recurring problem for Iyer; he struggled with time management throughout the 2025 campaign, racking up ₹36 lakh in total fines that year. While the BCCI stopped handing out match bans for over-rate issues after the 2025 season, the financial penalties are starting to stack up.
Why was Shreyas Iyer fined ₹24 lakh after the match against CSK?
He was penalised for failing to maintain the required over-rate for the second time during the IPL 2026 season.
Does the over-rate fine affect the rest of the Punjab Kings squad?
Yes, each player in the XI is fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.
Will Shreyas Iyer face a match suspension for repeated over-rate offences?
No, the BCCI updated the rules after the 2025 season to replace match bans with increasing financial penalties.
