Testicular torsion surgery has raised doubts about Tilak’s participation in the T20 World Cup.
The Indian cricket team has been handed a major scare ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Middle-order star Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand following testicular torsion surgery.
What’s more worrying is that his availability for the upcoming World Cup itself now hangs in the balance. A BCCI source confirmed the development, stating, “Tilak Varma ruled out of the New Zealand T20I series and is likely to miss the ICC T20 WC after he went through testicular torsion surgery.”
The source confirmed that the surgery was successful, but it is delicate and requires careful recovery, making it difficult to determine a timeline. He has been one of India’s most consistent T20 performers over the last year.
The 23-year-old left-hander rose to national spotlight after his match-winning 69* in the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan, guiding India to a memorable title win. Calm under pressure, fearless against spin, and surprisingly mature for his age, Tilak has quickly become a mainstay in India’s middle order.
Since making his T20I debut against the West Indies in August 2023, Tilak has played 40 matches, scoring 1183 runs at an average of 49.29 and a strike rate of 144.09, including two centuries and six half-centuries. These are elite numbers by any standard, and losing a player in such form is never ideal, especially before a major ICC event.
When is Tilak Varma expected to return?

As per reports, Tilak Varma‘s expected recovery period is three to four weeks. In theory, that gives him a chance to be fit before the T20 World Cup begins on February 7, where India open their campaign against the USA. However, match fitness, medical clearance, and confidence levels post-surgery are factors that cannot be rushed.
India’s schedule is packed, with games against Namibia (February 12), Pakistan (February 15), and the Netherlands (February 18). Even if Tilak returns in time, the team management may be cautious about throwing him straight into high-pressure matches.
It would be fair to say that Varma’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 is not guaranteed, and the selectors are already searching for other options.
Who can replace Tilak Varma?
With Tilak sidelined, India will need a like-for-like replacement – someone who can handle middle-order pressure, rotate strike, and accelerate when needed.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is one strong option. The Maharashtra batter has been in terrific domestic form and has the experience of playing at the international level. Although he is more comfortable as an opener, Gaikwad has shown flexibility by batting at various positions for his IPL franchise as per the team’s needs.
Interestingly, he was left out of the ODI squad against New Zealand recently, so this could be his route back into the setup. Another name in contention is Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai batter has just returned to fitness and made an immediate impact with a classy 82 off 53 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Iyer brings experience, leadership, and a solid record as an IPL-winning captain. He hasn’t played a T20I since December 2023, but in a World Cup year, form and experience can quickly bring players back into favour.
Riyan Parag is also another contender to watch out for. If he fully recovers from his shoulder injury, Parag offers a similar profile to Tilak – aggressive batting, part-time bowling, and electric fielding. His recent domestic performances suggest he is ready for a bigger responsibility.
Big headache for the Indian Team management
Varma’s injury is not just about one player missing. It disrupts the balance, combinations, and roles in the batting order. With players like Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube already in the squad, India have depth, but Tilak’s presence with the ability to control the middle overs is hard to replace.
For now, the focus will be on his recovery. But as things stand, India may have to prepare for the T20 World Cup without one of their most reliable young stars.
All eyes will be on the medical updates in the coming weeks – because Tilak’s return could well decide how strong India’s middle order looks on the biggest stage.
