Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a total of four catches in the Leeds tests, including three in the first innings, all off Bumrah.

Following India‘s humiliating five-wicket defeat to England in the first test of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy at Headingley on June 24, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been under intense criticism. Indian supporters are furious after a video of Jaiswal dancing in front of English fans went viral.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had previously come under fire for his fielding mistakes, even though he had scored an incredible century in the opening innings. Shortly after dropping Ben Duckett on Day five, he was spotted dancing and grinning, which further infuriated people.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time. With 84 balls left and five wickets remaining, Duckett scored a game-winning 149 to help England reach a challenging goal of 371, their second-highest successful run chase in test cricket and the highest ever against India at Headingley.

Throughout the first test, India was plagued by Jaiswal’s difficulties in the slips. In the first innings alone, he missed three catches off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, which let the hosts score 465 against India’s 471.

The left-handed batter’s actions were widely criticised, especially considering his poor fielding performance against England, which included more than seven missed opportunities. An instant and intense backlash followed the viral video, with supporters publicly doubting Yashasvi’s commitment and feeling of duty.

Ben Duckett, who led the charge in the chase with 149 runs, was one of the players who survived because of Jaiswal’s hesitations on the field. The damage was further increased by 65 runs from Zak Crawley.

India had hope after a middle-order hiccup, but Joe Root (53*) and rookie Jamie Smith (44*) ended the game with an undefeated 71-run combination.

When India’s bowlers were working hard and desperately needed wickets to alter the tide of the match, many fans blasted the Indian opener for coming across as carefree, unconcerned, and unconnected to the gravity of the situation.

India are now behind 0-1 in the five-match test series; the second test will begin on July 2 at Edgbaston. Following the defeat, Indian captain Shubman Gill lamented the lost opportunities and blasted the lower order for their lack of batsmanship against England.
