Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 73 runs in the first innings of the fourth test match between India and England.
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is having a dream run in the ongoing five-match test series against Ben Stokes-led England. The left-handed batter, who smashed back-to-back double centuries in the second and third tests against the Three Lions earlier this month, continued his form in the ongoing crucial fourth test match in Ranchi.
After the conclusion of the third test match, Indian left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal needed 55 runs in the Ranchi game to become the fifth Indian batter in Indian history to score 600 or more runs in a test series. Jaiswal hammered 545 runs in the first three tests against England in the ongoing series.
During the day 2 of the ongoing fourth test match between India and England, Jaiswal reached this historic milestone when he crossed the 55-run mark in the 40th over of the game. The left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal also joined Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid to reach an elite feat. Yashasvi Jaiswal became the third Indian batter to score 600 or more runs in a test series against England.
Legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid was the first Indian player to breach the 600-run mark against the English side in test cricket. Dravid achieved this iconic feat in the 2002 test series, while Virat Kohli achieved this rare feat in the home series in 2016/17.
Most runs by Indian batsmen in a test series against England:
1. Virat Kohli – 655 runs, 2016/17
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 618* runs, 2024
3. Rahul Dravid – 602 runs, 2002
Yashasvi Jaiswal shatters Virender Sehwag’s test record
The 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal is on a mission to break every record in the ongoing five-match test series between India and England. During day 2 of the fourth test match, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal shattered former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s 16-year-old record for hitting most test sixes in a calendar year by an Indian batter.
The Indian opener achieved this feat when Jaiswal smashed England’s spinner Shoaib Bashir for a big six over long-on. After that six, Jaiswal broke Sehwag’s long-standing record. Jaiswal has now surpassed Sehwag’s tally in just his fifth match in 2024, while the former opener Sehwag took 14 matches and 27 innings to set this Indian test record.
The Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has now smashed 23 sixes in test cricket in 2024 so far. While Sehwag hammered 22 maximums in 2008.
Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of creating another record in Indian test cricket history. The 22-year-old Jaiswal, who now has 618 runs to his name in the ongoing series, will become second Indian to score 700 or more runs in a bilateral test series if he scores 82 more runs. So far, only Sunil Gavaskar has hit 700+ runs in a bilateral test series, he achieved it twice in his career.
