Yograj Singh said India need Rohit Sharma for five more years.

Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh believes that Rohit Sharma has the class to play till 45 years of age and the team needs him for five more years. The veteran Indian batsman will be next seen on the field during the ODI series against Australia in October, where he will lead the team in three games.

Rohit has already pulled the curtains down in T20Is and tests, but is still the captain of Indian Cricket Team in ODIs. After leading the team to the ICC T20 World Cup last year, the 38-year-old hung up the boots in the shortest format. Ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in May 2025, he announced his retirement from test cricket.

The right-handed batsman last played for India during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March. Recently, some reports suggested that Rohit and Virat Kohli might retire from ODI cricket after the Australia series in October. Being active only in ODIs, the duo has expressed their desire to play the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.

Speaking to News18, former India pacer Yograj Singh said that India need Rohit Sharma for five more years. He also said the Indian opener should run 10 kilometres every day to improve his fitness.

“You can say, ‘Rohit, aapki hume 5 saal aur zarurat hai yaar’ (Rohit, we need you for five more years, man), so please do more for your country, work on your fitness and everything. Put four men on him, make him run 10 kilometres every morning. He has the class to play till 45 years of age, if he wants,” he said.

Yograj also heaped praises on Rohit’s batting, saying that he single-handedly outplays the opposition with his performance.

“The man about whom so many people speak rubbish, Rohit Sharma – I said that day that Rohit will be my man, the man, my man. The way he batted, his batting one side and the rest of the team’s batting on the other side. His innings on one side and the rest of the world on the other. That’s his class”, he added.

Notably, Rohit was last seen in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he scored 418 runs across 15 games for Mumbai Indians (MI). At an impressive strike rate of 149.28, the right-handed batsman slammed four fifties in the tournament. However, he struggled with his fitness on the field due to a reported hamstring injury and was used as an Impact Player in many games.

Meanwhile, the three-match ODI series between India and Australia will be played from October 19 to 25. It will be followed by a five-match T20I series, which will conclude with the final game on November 8.
