A test century is a special milestone in every batter’s career. Scoring a double century is even more special and rare moment in test cricket. This requires a great amount of determination while batting in a test match. Batting in test cricket is one of the most difficult aspects of the game. There are many big names in the list of batters who have hit a double century in test cricket.
Indian cricket has contributed immensely to the game with their legendary batting names. A few of them left their impacts early in their careers with consecutive tons, double centuries, or even a triple hundred. Vinod Kambli is one of the rare Indian batters to score consecutive double centuries in test cricket. Let’s have a look at the top four youngest Indian batsmen to hit a double century in test cricket.
4. Nawab of Pataudi – 23 years 34 days :
Former Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan, a.k.a, Nawab of Pataudi his first ever double hundred against England at Feroz Shah Kotla (Now Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium) in Delhi when he was only 23 years and 34 days old. Nawab of Pataudi’s double century came in the second innings of this test match played in 1964. Nawab of Pataudi scored an unbeaten 203 runs which included 23 fours and two sixes. His innings helped India draw the test match.
3. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 22 years 37 days :
Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed his first-ever test double-century in Visakhapatnam against England in February, 2024. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a well-controlled knock against the English bowlers and went on to score 209 runs in 290 balls. He smashed 19 fours and seven sixes in the innings. Jaiswal is the third youngest Indian batter to score a double hundred in test cricket.
2. Sunil Gavaskar – 21 years 277 days :
Sunil Gavaskar was just 21 years and 277 days old when he smashed his first-ever double hundred in test cricket. Gavaskar’s maiden test double century came in his debut series against the West Indies in tour of 1971. Before this innings, he hit three centuries on the tour already.
In the first innings of the fifth test of India’s tour of West Indies in 1971, Sunil Gavaskar hit 124 and then doubled it up in the second innings. Gavaskar scored 220 runs in the second innings and helped India set a target of 262 runs for West Indies. Chasing 262, West Indies were eight wickets down for 165 runs when the match ended in a draw. Gavaskar scored 344 runs in this match, which is still a record for most runs scored by an Indian batter in a test match (first and second innings combined).
1. Vinod Kambli – 21 years 32 days :
Former Indian left-hand batter Vinod Kambli is India’s youngest batter to hit a double century in test cricket. Vinod Kambli was only 21 years and 32 days old when he smashed his maiden double century against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 1993. Kambli scored 224 runs off 411 balls with 23 fours. His innings helped India win the test match by an innings and 15 runs.
