Cricket is miles ahead of any other sport in terms of popularity in India. The passion for the game runs deep in the veins of every Indian, and almost every child grows up dreaming of becoming a cricketer, inspired by their favourite stars.

Over the years, cricket has evolved into more than just a sport in the country; it is a culture that unites millions. India’s strong domestic structure, grassroots development, and constant exposure to international cricket have encouraged countless young talents to take up the game and pursue it professionally.

As a result, the Indian cricketing system has produced several prodigious youngsters who impressed at an early age and earned opportunities to represent the national team.

Many of these players announced their arrival on the biggest stage while still in their teens, showcasing immense talent and maturity beyond their years. On that note, let’s take a look at the top 10 youngest men’s players to debut for the Indian cricket team.

Washington Sundar made his debut for the Men in Blue at the age of just 18 when he earned his ODI cap on 13 December 2017 against Sri Lanka.

The right-arm off-spinner and left-handed batter has since represented India across all three formats of the game and continues to be an important part of the national setup.

Known for his composure, control with the ball, and growing maturity with the bat, Sundar has established himself as a reliable all-round option in both limited-overs and red-ball cricket.

9. Chetan Sharma – 17 years 338 days

Right-arm pacer Chetan Sharma is one of the youngest players to represent India in international cricket. He made his ODI debut on 7 December 1983 against the West Indies and went on to make his Test debut the very next year against Pakistan.

Sharma made an immediate impact in Test cricket by picking up a wicket with the fifth ball of his career, becoming only the third Indian to take a wicket in his first over in the format.

His most memorable achievement came during the 1987 World Cup, where he registered the first-ever hat-trick in the tournament’s history. He also became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in ODIs, etching his name permanently in cricketing history.

8. Laxmi Ratan Shukla – 17 years 320 days

Due to his impressive performances at the domestic level, Laxmi Ratan Shukla received a national call-up in 1999. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on 22 March 1999 in Nagpur and played his last ODI later that year against the West Indies.

However, he did not get further opportunities at the international level as a bowler, with young pace bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra entering the scene and firmly establishing their places in the senior team through consistent performances.

7. Vijay Mehra – 17 years 265 days

Vijay Laxman Mehra was one of the youngest Indian cricketers to make his international debut, receiving his Test cap on 2 December 1955 against New Zealand. At the time, he held the record as India’s youngest Test debutant, a distinction he kept until Maninder Singh made his debut decades later.

A promising talent from an early age, Mehra went on to represent India in 8 Test matches. Though his international career was relatively short, he left a mark with his composed batting and technique, showing glimpses of the potential that made him one of the youngest to step onto the global stage for the Men in Blue.

Harbhajan Singh, often regarded as one of the finest spinners to have played for the Indian team, made his international debut at the age of just 17 against Australia on 25 March 1998. His early debut highlighted the immense talent he possessed and the faith the team management had in him at such a young age.

Over the course of an illustrious career, he represented India in 103 Test matches, 228 ODI matches, and 28 T20I matches. Across all formats, he picked up an impressive 711 wickets, firmly establishing himself as one of India’s most successful and influential bowlers of all time.

5. Maninder Singh – 17 years 193 days

Maninder Singh represented India in 35 Test matches and 59 One Day Internationals during his international career. He made his debut for India at the age of just 17, earning his Test cap on 23 December 1982 against Pakistan. At the time, he was one of the youngest players to play Test cricket for India, which underlined his immense promise as a left-arm spinner.

Maninder became a regular member of the Indian Test team in the mid-1980s, especially in subcontinental conditions, where his control and variations proved effective. He also played a supporting role alongside senior spinners and contributed to several memorable Indian victories.

Parthiv Patel made his international debut in 2002 against England at Trent Bridge at the age of just 17 years and 152 days, becoming the youngest wicketkeeper in the history of Test cricket.

He was drafted into the side as a replacement for the injured Ajay Ratra and broke the long-standing record held by Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad (17 years and 300 days). After MS Dhoni’s arrival, Parthiv gradually lost his place in the team around 2004.

He continued to make comebacks over the years but was never able to cement a permanent spot in the Indian team. Across his career, Parthiv represented India in 25 Test matches, 38 One Day Internationals, and 2 T20 Internationals.

3. Laxman Sivaramakrishnan – 17 years 118 days

Laxman is among the youngest players in Indian cricket history to receive a Test cap. The right-arm leg spinner made his Test debut against the West Indies on 28 April 1983.

Despite showing potential at a young age, he did not get many opportunities at the international level, and due to tough competition and limited opportunities to prove himself, he was often in and out of the team.

Over the course of his career, Laxman represented India in 9 Test matches and 16 One Day Internationals, with his international stint remaining brief but noteworthy given how early he broke into the national team.

Chawla was rewarded for his impressive performances in U19 cricket and for India B, which earned him an early international call-up. However, he was unable to cement a permanent place in the national side and went on to play only 3 Test matches, 25 One Day Internationals, and 7 T20 Internationals for India.
