India's tour of West Indies 2023
Yuzvendra Chahal highlights the difference in Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit, and Hardik’s captaincy styles
Yuzvendra Chahal spoke in a press meet ahead of the second T20I between West Indies and India in Guyana.
India leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal highlighted the difference in captaincy styles of the four leaders of the Indian team he has played under: MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and now Hardik Pandya, while speaking in a press meet ahead of the second T20I between India and the West Indies to be played in Guyana.
Chahal has been a key performer for the Indian team in white-ball cricket over the past few years; he has taken 121 wickets in 72 ODIs at an average of 27.13 and an economy rate of 5.26. His best bowling figures in the 50-over format are 6/42.
He has been an important member of the Indian team, but owing to different reasons, he hasn’t been able to hold down a spot in the playing XI.
Meanwhile, he played an important role in the first T20I against the West Indies in Trinidad by picking up two wickets in one over to help India stop the hosts from scoring under 150 runs. However, the Indian batting faltered, and the Men in Blue lost the encounter by 4 runs.
Everybody wants to win: Yuzvendra Chahal compares captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya
Chahal has played under different captains, which include Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and now Hardik Pandya. When quizzed about the difference in the captaincy of these four captains, Chahal affirmed that there is hardly any change.
“I see it like a family which has four brothers first was Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni, then came Virat and Rohit, and after that, Hardik came. So the equation is the same and there is no change. On the ground, everybody wants to win and Hardik gives us freedom which we were getting earlier, you can set the field according to yourself. If the plan doesn’t work then he gives his input. Things are similar, a freedom bowler wants they are getting it,” Chahal said in the pre-match conference.
He also talked about the lack of opportunities in recent times. Chahal was not part of the Indian XI that played the three ODIs beforehand, as Kuldeep Yadav was preferred over him.
“I am very happy that I get the opportunity to wear the blue jersey every day. I am with the team now, travel with the team and do net sessions with them, and not at home. It is not an individual game. I have also played chess – that’s an individual game, but this is a team game,” Chahal said.
The second and third T20Is will be played at the National Stadium of Guyana on August 6 and 8.
