Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were married in 2020, and their divorce was finalized earlier this year.
Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has finally spoken up about his split with Dhanashree Verma. He disclosed the issues in their marriage and the impact they had on his mental health.
Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were married in 2020, but after a few years of marriage, things began to go south. According to the leg-spinner, he and Dhanashree had agreed to keep their split private until the divorce was finalized.
Yuzvendra Chahal reveals mental health struggles
Chahal revealed that his mental health was significantly impacted by coping with personal issues, rumors about him, and public pressure. He experienced severe melancholy, insomnia, and even suicidal thoughts during this difficult period.
According to the spinner, the stress was so bad that he was unable to concentrate on cricket and felt exhausted.
“I got anxiety attacks; I was in depression. I had suicidal thoughts. I watched so many things about myself on social media. I wanted a break from cricket. I started shivering due to anxiety and sweating despite the AC being on,” Chahal shared on a podcast with Raj Shamani.
The spinner also revealed that, in order to concentrate on his mental health, he asked his state cricket team to take a sabbatical during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024–2025.
Yuzvendra Chahal reveals why the marriage to Dhanashree Verma didn’t work out

Chahal clarified that it got challenging to manage their hectic work and personal lives. Dhanashree was equally occupied with her work life as the Indian cricket player was with his duties as a player. Over time, this led to their emotional separation.
“It was going on for a long while. We decided we do not want to show the people. Who would know if it did not happen? Maybe it will become a different scenario. We were like, Until we reach a point of no return, we are not going to say anything; we will be like a normal couple on social media,” he said.
He acknowledged that both parties must put forth effort and show understanding in relationships. However, it might be difficult to make things work when two people have distinct personalities and objectives. They had little time for one another because of their hectic schedules, and with time, their distance from one another increased.
Chahal claimed that he was unable to concentrate on the relationship because he was too occupied with other things. It was harder every day, and he began to feel like giving up.
“A relationship is like a compromise. If one gets angry, the other has to listen. Sometimes the nature of two people does not match. This was going on for 1-2 years. Two ambitious people can stay together. Everyone has their own lives; everyone has their own goals. As a partner, you have to support it. You are working for something for 18-20 years; you cannot leave it for a relationship,” he stated.
“I think when my divorce happened, people alleged I was a cheater. I have never cheated in my life; I am not that kind of person. You won’t find anyone more loyal than me. I think from my heart for my close ones, always. I do not demand; I always give. When people don’t know anything, but they keep blaming me, so you start thinking [otherwise],” he signed off.
