Top five longest home games unbeaten streaks in the Premier League history
These iconic teams made their home a fortress after avoiding defeat for a long period of time.
The Premier League is an unforgiving league with no space for complacency. In a competition where any team can beat any opponent, finding consistency is a very difficult feat. Due to the competitive nature of the league and the financial might of the clubs across the board, making a fortress out of the home stadium and grinding out results consistently takes effort, planning and commitment from all the players, coach and support staff.
In the past, some clubs have been able to build long streaks of remaining unbeaten at their home grounds. Teams like Chelsea, Manchester United and more were too strong in their own backyard for multiple seasons until they weren’t anymore.
It makes for an interesting look at such teams that managed to forge long unbeaten streaks. Here are the five longest unbeaten home streaks in the Premier League:
Manchester United - 35
Unlike Manchester United of today, the Manchester United of old was dominant and unstoppable in the league. The early years of the Premier League saw a sustained period of success for the Red Devils, where they won four of the first five seasons.
Between the period of December 1994 to November 1996, the Red Devils went 35 games unbeaten at Old Trafford, which was a record back then. MUFC won the league in both the 1993-94 and 1995-96 seasons due to this record.
Manchester United - 36
From December 1998 to December 2000, Manchester United went unbeaten in 36 home games. This was an improvement on their previous record of 35 games without a defeat at Old Trafford.
During this glorious period, MUFC won two league titles, in 1998-99 and 1999-00. It was during the 1999-00 season when MUFC won the iconic treble which included the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League as well.
Manchester City - 37
Manchester City’s recent success began around the start of the 2010 decade after the arrival of rich owners and the inclusion of multiple top-level players. The club set a record of going 37 games without a defeat at home between December 2010 to December 2012.
The Cityzens finally won their first-ever Premier League title in the 2011-12 season thanks to a sensational home record.
Liverpool - 68
Liverpool set a personal best record of going 68 games without tasting defeat at Anfield between April 2017 to January 2021. The run stretching across four years also had the season affected due to Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.
Thanks to a strong performance at their home ground, the Reds finally won their first-ever Premier League title (first since rebranding in 1993) during the 2019-20 campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s men were close to winning the league in 2018-19 and 2021-22 too but came second to MCFC by a single point in both instances.
Chelsea - 86
Chelsea holds the record for having the longest unbeaten streak at home in the Premier League. In the successful Jose Mourinho era, the Blues did not lose a game at Stamford Bridge from February 2004 to October 2008.
The London-based club won two league titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06 while producing this record. Furthermore, CFC finished second in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns to MUFC. It is difficult to imagine if this monstrous record of 86 games unbeaten at home streak will ever be beaten in the Premier League.
