The Portuguese skipper was seen fighting to hold back tears as the camera panned toward him.

Portugal skipper and former Manchester United star, Cristiano Ronaldo, was brimming with emotion during the Portuguese national anthem before his team's first FIFA World Cup 2022 match against Ghana.

Cristiano Ronaldo looked like he was trying hard not to cry when he sang the Portuguese national anthem just before the World Cup game against Ghana.

Because of his prolonged struggle at Manchester United, the 37-year-old forward has made the headlines in the last few weeks. The club on Tuesday announced that Ronaldo is to leave the club with immediate effect after a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

A free agent now, Ronaldo's sole aim will be to lift his maiden World Cup title with Portugal. He will eye a winning start to the tournament against Ghana.

The veteran forward is playing in his fifth World Cup and will try to bring the trophy home in what will likely be his last tournament for Portugal. The team led by Fernando Santos is in Group H with Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea.

Ronaldo confirmed that he was leaving United in a statement he put out on Tuesday. He said: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early."

"I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge."
