From UEFA goalkeeper of the year to Senegal's second choice gk
Edouard Mendy has had a topsy-turvy last few months for club and county
The 2021 UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the year and Senegalese international Edouard Mendy is expected to be on bench during the fixture of Senegal against Qatar in the FIFA World Cup. The change may come after the recent performance by Mendy against Netherlands in which they lost 2 to nothing, both goals coming from the goalkeeper’s mistake.
The first one was after Mendy misjudged the pass from Frankie De Jong which led to a header at the back of the net by Cody Gakpo in the 84th minute. The second goal came after Mendy couldn’t push hard enough from Depay’s shot which became a perfect ball for Klaasson who shot it to goal at the last minute of play. The Senegalese side were an equal match for the Dutch, if it had not been for the errors of Mendy. Many pundits and fans criticised Mendy for his performance against Netherlands.
Chelsea 2nd choice goalkeeper
The Chelsea Goalkeeper is also having a topsy-turvy season with the club this season due to injuries and poor performances. Having played 9 games, the champions league winner with Chelsea has a save percentage of 67% this season. He has only played once in the champions league this season. The Chelsea goalkeeper is also pushed to 2nd choice with Graham potter considering Kepa as his first-choice goalkeeper for his campaign.
Aliou Cisse took the blame for the defeat against Holland. The injured Sadio Mane less team witnessed two more injuries, Kouyate and Diallo, as confirmed by the manager. Cisse would also be looking for other option for the match against Qatar. Alfred Gomis of Rennes and Seny Dieng of QPR F.C. could be the possible replacement for Edouard Mendy. The African Cup of Nations winners would be looking to bag 3 points against Qatar on Friday at 6:30PM IST, at the Al Thumama Stadium.
