The nations now meet in the final of the Qatar tournament

The matchup between Argentina and France will be the 13th time these two countries have met, and both will be seeking to win their third World Cup.

On Sunday, December 18 at Lusail Stadium, Argentina and defending champion France will square off in the final match of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Argentinean soccer advanced to the championship game with a 3-0 semifinal victory against Croatia, while France beat Morocco 2-0 to reach its second straight championship game.

Argentina vs France Head-to-Head record in the World Cup

Group stage play at the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay marked the first-ever meeting between Argentina and France. The match was won by Argentina thanks to an 81st-minute goal by Luis Monti, and France was eliminated from the competition as a result.

In the World Cup that Argentina hosted in 1978, the two teams clashed once again. Argentina eliminated France from the competition with a 2-1 victory in a Group Stage encounter. In the first half, Argentina took the lead on a goal by Daniel Passarella, but France responded in the 61st minute through Michel Platini. A goal scored by Leopoldi Luque in the 74th minute of the second half proved to be the game-winner.

The two teams last squared off in Russia in the 2018 World Cup. The score was 4-3, and France advanced to the quarterfinals.

Antoine Griezmann scored the game's first goal from the penalty spot in the 13th minute. But in the 41st and 48th minutes, Angel Di Maria and Gabriel Mercado scored for Argentina to take the lead. But then Benjamin Pavard tied it up with a magnificent volley, which was dubbed the "goal of the tournament." The French were behind 3-2 when Kylian Mbappe scored twice in as many minutes in the 64th and 68th. Despite Sergio Aguero's goal in the 93rd minute of extra time, France was able to hang on for the victory.
