There were some notable performances in the league during the past week.
The Indian Super League 2022-23 saw a lot of sensational football action in the recent round of matches. Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC both secured wins, intensifying the battle for the top place in the league table. Last season’s finalists Kerala Blasters FC recorded their second win in a row by beating reigning ISL Shield winners Jamshedpur FC.
East Bengal FC were victors in their clash against Bengaluru FC thanks to a wondrous last-minute goal. Another Kolkata-based club ATK Mohun Bagan got the win against visiting FC Goa to stay in playoff contention.
All of the fixtures had notable individual performances where players came forward to be the difference makers for their respective clubs. Here is a look at the best-performing players who made Khel Now’s ISL Team of the Week for the game week 13:
GK - Suvam Sen (East Bengal FC)
Suvam Sen was crucial for East Bengal FC in their 2-1 win over Bengaluru FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The custodian made an incredible six saves to keep his team in the match. Without his contribution, the Red & Gold Brigade would not be in a position to win the match late in injury time.
RB - Nikhil Poojary (Hyderbad FC)
Nikhil Poojary was one of the best performers on the night when Hyderabad FC demolished NorthEast United FC by a 6-1 scoreline. The right-back was quick in thwarting any danger on the right flank and also contributed to the attack. He made one assist and also had a shot on target for the Nizams.
CB - Odei Onaindia (Hyderabad FC)
Odei Onaindia was one of the scorers in Hyderabad FC’s thumping 6-1 win over struggling NorthEast United FC. He was solid in defence as well. The experienced centre-back deserved to come away from the game with a clean sheet but it was not to happen. He had three clearances and two blocks while defending.
CB - Anwar Ali (FC Goa)
Anwar Ali was unfortunately on the losing side when ATK Mohun Bagan met FC Goa. The game ended 2-1 in favour of the hosts but Ali was on the scoresheet for the losing Gaurs. He got a faint touch on a cross that gave his side a chance to secure a point. The defender also had 81 touches on the ball, showing composure on the ball and confidence in possession.
LB - Jerry Lalrinzuala (East Bengal FC)
Jerry Lalrinzuala was one of the star performers for East Bengal FC in their memorable win over Bengaluru FC. The left-back made five clearances to keep his side alive in the game. Furthermore, the full-back made three interceptions and two blocks in an outstanding defensive performance.
CM - Jeakson Singh (Kerala Blasters FC)
Jeakson Singh showed maturity way beyond his years in Kerala Blasters FC’s 3-1 win over Jamshedpur FC. The midfielder was a calming presence in the middle of the park. He had an 86% pass success rate from the match and created one scoring chance too. In terms of providing cover to the defence, he made four blocks.
CM - Borja Herrera (Hyderabad FC)
Borja Herrera delivered another strong performance while playing in midfield for Hyderabad FC. The Spaniard is filling in for injured Joao Victor. In the 6-1 win over NEUFC over the week, the midfielder scored once. He also went on to provide an assist and take four attempts on goal. The Highlanders had no way of stopping him from influencing the game.
RW - Lallianzuala Chhangte (Mumbai City FC)
Lallianzuala Chhangte is in the form of his life and one of the finest performing Indian players in the ISL this season. The winger scored a fabulous brace for the Islanders in a 4-2 win, taking away the Hero of the Match award. He has seven goals in the league already and may add more in the forthcoming matches. He also had an assist in the game, brilliantly beating a marker on the flank and serving the ball on a platter for Alberto Noguera.
RW - Bipin Singh (Mumbai City FC)
Bipin Singh was yet again one of the scorers in Mumbai City FC’s 4-2 win over Odisha FC. The all-time leading goalscorer for the Islanders takes his tally for the season to five goals. On top of scoring a crucial goal, he created two scoring chances for his teammates.
ST - Javier Siverio (Hyderabad FC)
Javier Siverio led Hyderabad FC’s attacking line with style, scoring a brilliant brace in a 6-1 win over the visiting Highlanders. His tally for the season now stands at four goals which makes him the leading goalscorer at the club for now. When Bartholomew Ogbeche is struggling to find his scoring boots, the Spaniard is holding the fort well.
ST - Cleiton Silva (East Bengal FC)
Cleiton Silva scored a mindblowing free-kick against Bengaluru FC which could be a serious contender for the goal of the season. The injury-time goal handed East Bengal FC vital three points. The striker also scored earlier in the game and ended the match with a brace. He now has seven goals in the league and is a strong favourite for the golden boot.
