Top 10 most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history

The Reds have spent a huge amount on transfers in the last few years.
After winning the 2005 Champions League, Liverpool was having trouble winning trophies. But after 2010, significant players like Torres and Alonso began to leave the team. But after purchasing the team in late 2010, the Fenway Sports Group set out to improve Liverpool’s fortunes and dug deep into their riches to do it.
They first had trouble standing out, but they’ve recently enjoyed success, taking home the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League for the first time in 2020.
The ten most expensive players in Liverpool’s history are listed below.
12. Diogo Jota – £40m (from Wolves, 2020)

Diogo Jota was brought in from Wolves as a backup for the solid front three of Salah, Mane, and Roberto Firmino. However, his performances were so good that he started to push for a spot in the starting lineup.
Even though he got hurt in the middle of the season, Jota still scored 13 goals for the Reds across all competitions in his first season. At times, he played instead of Firmino or Mane. In his second season, he scored 21 in all of his games. He made improvements to an offensive line that needed it badly, and even though the price was high, he’s proved to be worth it.
11. Fabinho – £40.5m (from Monaco, 2018)
Fabinho is a tough defensive midfielder who patrols the pitch and shields the back four. He was essential to Klopp’s rebuilding of Liverpool, along with Firmino, Mane, and Salah. He is now finally being acknowledged as one of the top defensive midfielders in the world, and at £40 million, it was a steal.
10. Christian Benteke – £41.8m (from Aston Villa, 2015)
A transfer that wasn’t successful. In his three years at Aston Villa, Christian Benteke scored 49 goals. He then moved to Anfield. He only played for Liverpool for one season, scoring ten goals while making just 14 league starts, and was then traded to Crystal Palace for £28 million, which was a respectable sum but undoubtedly a loss. His stunning acrobatic strike versus Manchester United at Old Trafford stands out, although this strategy wasn’t successful.
9. Luis Diaz – £50m (from Porto, 2022)
After the departure of Mane to Bayern Munich, it became evident that Liverpool needed to recruit a replacement attacking superstar. Luis Diaz, a winger for Porto, was purchased in January 2022 for a reported £37.5m plus £12.5m in add-ons in the hopes that he would be that player. During his 2.5 years in Portugal, the Colombian became one of the most thrilling attackers in Europe.
8. Cody Gakpo – £50m (from PSV, 2023)
Due to a slew of nasty injuries entering the new year of 2023, Liverpool sprang into action, acquiring PSV forward Cody Gakpo for one reported £50 million. Liverpool snatched a victory from their archrivals at Man United, who were widely anticipated to make an offer for Gakpo in January 2023.
Gakpo scored three goals for a Netherlands squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup, and by 2022, he had established himself as one of Europe’s finest, impressive young attackers.
7. Naby Keita – £54m (from RB Leipzig, 2018)

After a couple of good years at RB Leipzig, Liverpool decided that Naby Keita would be a great addition to their midfield and spent more than £50 million on him. In hindsight, that fee was way too high, and Keita hasn’t been able to earn it back yet. Klopp hasn’t put much faith in the Guinean player. Instead, he prefers Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho.
Keita has also had trouble with injuries, and since he moved to England, he has missed many games. So, he has never started more than 25 games in all tournaments in a single season at the club. In 2020/21, he only played 522 mins in the Premier League. It wasn’t a good move, but he still has time to make it right if he gets the chance.
6. Alisson – £56.3m (from Roma, 2018)
Alisson has done much better as Liverpool’s goalkeeper than any other keeper who has come before him. First, Simon Mignolet was a problem, and then Loris Karius made mistakes that cost the Reds the Champions League in 2017/18. Alisson was brought in, and he resolved the situation at the back right away.
Alisson and the other six Premier League goalkeepers who have managed to scoreIn his first year, he kept 27 clean sheets across all competitions. His rock-solid defence helped them win the Champions League that year.
He built a great relationship with his back four, which helped them win the Premier League in 2020. Even though he had a few bad games in 2020/21, his late game-winner against West Brom helped his team get into the Champions League. He was great again in 2021-22 when Liverpool almost won a historic quadruple but fell just short.
5. Dominik Szoboszlai – £60m (from RB Leipzig, 2023)
The Hungarian midfielder became the third most expensive signing for the Reds. Dominik Szoboszlai signed a five-year contract with the Premier League side. He is an exceptional talent, and Jurgen Klopp’s side decided to pay his buyout clause.
4. Hugo Ekitike – £69m (From Eintracht Frankfurt 2025)
Hugo Ekitike will be acquired by Liverpool for a set fee of £69 million (€80 million) from Eintracht Frankfurt; negotiations for the deal’s bonuses are still ongoing.
The offer’s entire package may increase to £78 million (€90 million), although discussions on the add-ons’ structure are still ongoing. Although both sides are optimistic about reaching a comprehensive deal, more work needs to be done to make it official.
3. Virgil van Dijk – £76.2m (from Southampton, 2018)
Virgil van Dijk, arguably the most crucial transfer in Liverpool’s recent history, transformed the club’s fortunes after joining from Southampton in January 2018. He led them to the Champions League final in his first six months, which they won the following year.
Van Dijk was the runner-up in the 2019 Ballon d’Or after becoming the finest centre-back in the world, and his vision and distribution at the back were possibly an essential component of their title-winning team. A £75 million player is not often considered a steal, but Van Dijk has proved to be one since moving from St Mary’s to Anfield.
2. Darwin Nunez – £85.6m (from Benfica, 2022)

Nunez became Liverpool’s most expensive player when he moved from Benfica in the offseason of 2022. Liverpool agreed to shell out an initial cost of £64.2 million (€75 million) and an additional fee of £21.4 million (€25 million) to reach the total fee of £85.6 million (€100 million).
Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 games during the 2021-22 season, including goals at home and away against Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinals.
1. Florian Wirtz £116.5m (from Bayer Leverkusen, 2025)
After convincing Florian Wirtz to turn down Bayern Munich, Liverpool made a big move to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star. Despite a club-record expenditure, the Reds will feel like they pulled off a coup because he is regarded as one of the greatest talents in international football.
In order to sign the Germany international, Liverpool had to pay €117.5 million up front, with the total cost possibly increasing to €136.3 million if all bonuses were paid. The latter amount would be a record fee for the Premier League club.
Who is Liverpool’s record signing?
Florian Wirtz is the club’s record signing.
How much did Reds buy Van Dijk for?
They bought him for £76.2m.
Is Hugo Ekitike also among the most expensive signings?
