Top five teams with most Premier League points at halfway mark of the season
Arsenal are currently sitting on top the league with just one defeat this season.
Arsenal has been a force to be reckoned with this season. At the halfway point of the season, they have accumulated 50 points, a club record. Speaking of rampant forces, Arsenal are not the only one to reach 50 points at the halfway point of the season. This mark has been achieved by many teams in the toughest league in the world. Recent years have seen teams like Manchester City and Liverpool completely dominate the league.
The Gunners still have a long way to go, no one knows if they're going to win the league. Four other clubs experienced the same thumping start, and three of those clubs went on to win the League title. Continuing our discussion, let's take a look at five clubs with 50 points by halfway through the season.
Arsenal (2022/23) - 50 points (?)
Arsenal this season has broken all stereotypes of Arsenal's recent reputation of tumbling at crucial moments. They have relentlessly dominated the entire season and are currently on 50 points at the halfway point. After the last winning title decades ago back in 2003, this season is the greatest hope for all gunners to relive the Premier League champions vibe.
The captain of Arsenal's ship, Mikel Arteta, has taken all decisions to inch perfection so far. He didn't have the best start to his Arsenal managerial career, but the tables have turned now. He has made an impeccable young force of players like Saka, Saliba, Gabriel, Martinelli, and White with a young leader like Martin Ødegaard.
Liverpool (2018/19) - 51 points (97 points)
Good starts do not always lead to League wins, and Liverpool's 2018/19 season campaign proves this. At the end of the season, they broke all of their records and clinched 97 points, but that wasn't enough to break Liverpool's Premier League drought. Manchester City outcasted them by just one point.
Although Liverpool didn't win the Premier League, it was a successful campaign in all. In the Champions League final, they defeated Tottenham Hotspurs to win the Champions League for the sixth time in their history. With 22 goals each, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were joint top scorers in the Premier League.
Chelsea (2005/06)- 52 points (91 points)
A majority of the teams on this list are from recent years when modern attacking football took hold, but the name Chelsea of 2005/06 is sufficient to prove why Jose Mourinho's Chelsea of that season was exceptional. Even though the blues weren't a heart-stopping attacking team, they had that killer instinct to win matches without flexing it.
It was a completely dominant season for Jose Mourinho's team, finishing with 91 points as Champions. Chelsea began the season with nine victories in a row and went on to win 20 games in 22 games. Chelsea also became the first club ever to win against every other team in a season.
Liverpool (2019/20)- 55 points (99 points)
Liverpool won their first Premier League title in 30 years during the 2019/20 season. The same season was also plagued by the COVID Virus, which caused the league to be stopped midway. In spite of a number of unforeseen obstacles, Liverpool managed to achieve their dream and built on it for a strong start to the season where they gained 51 points by mid-season.
As well as winning the Premier League after 30 years, the Champions League win in 2018/19 made the 2019/20 Premier League just the cherry on top. In other major tournaments that season, Liverpool couldn't replicate that form as they were knocked out of the Champions League, the EFL Cup Quarter Finals, and the FA Cup Fifth Round.
Manchester City (2017/18)- 55 points (100 points)
The 2017/18 season was the start of Pep Guardiola's domination in English Football. The Spanish maestro arrived in 2016 on English soil but his glory days started after grinding out for one season. Manchester City not only won the League but set many impeccable records like most away points (50), most points (100), most wins (32), most away wins (16), most goals (106), best goal difference (+79) and most consecutive wins (18).
Pep Guardiola aligned all the pieces perfectly that season, from signing Bernardo Silva, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, and Aymeric Laporte to his tactics. Sergio Aguero finished as the top scorer for them with 21 goals while Kevin De Bruyne won the Premier League playmaker of the season award for his 16 assists.
