Who is Chris Rigg - Sunderland's new wonderkid?
The 15-year-old recently made his professional debut in the FA Cup
Chris Rigg, the 15 years 203 days old Sunderland prodigy made history on Saturday when he appeared for them in a FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury. He became the youngest ever outfield player to have ever played in the club’s history so far.
The manager Tony Mowbray told the BBC radio that the opportunity for the 15-year-old to show his talents came amidst a lot of injuries in the squad. He praised the midfielder’s talent and told that he deserved to be on the pitch. The youngster seems to have managed to gain the trust of the manager who seemed happy with the player’s skills. Tony Mowbray also mentioned that Rigg would be joining the senior team in training as the manager sees potential in him and wants the player to develop.
Chris Rigg is the product of Sunderland’s academy and his talents have earned him a spot for the Sunderland and the English U-16 squad. The young midfielder is smooth with his left foot. He can create chances and also fulfil his defensive. Chris is still young and there’s a lot to happen in the future but given his performances, he is developing into a brilliant player. Due to his age, he has to study along side his football. He gets two to three days off in which he trains for football.
Big clubs lining up for the youngster's signature
All these qualities have caught attention of big clubs. According to reports, many clubs like Man City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, etc saw potential in the young player and wants to bring him in. Leading the race is the arch-rivals of Sunderland, Newcastle united. Newcastle United wants to add the young prodigy to their squad.
Also, it is reported that Rigg along with his family are huge supporters of Newcastle. This piece of information makes it easy for the Newcastle side to seal a deal and get Rigg in their side. Another club in line is reported to be Manchester United. Amid all these rumours, Sunderland would be looking to keep Chris Rigg with them only but reports suggests that it would not be very easy as many clubs are interested in the youngster.
