Santosh Trophy 2022-23: Fixtures, results, standings & more
The semi-finals and finals are set to take place at the King Fahd Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
The 76th edition of Santosh Trophy is up and running, as an exciting tournament awaits us. All the group matches are going to be played in three different venues across Odisha, including the Kalinga Stadium, Capital football arena and OFA 7th Battalion ground, with the semi-finals and final of the tournament set to be played in the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Following the qualification round, which consisted of 36 teams, only 12 could make it to the final round, with strong state teams like Mizoram and Assam failing to qualify. The teams selected for the final round, have then been plotted in groups of two, each consisting of six teams. All the teams will play every other team present in their group, at the end of which the top two teams from both the groups, will qualify for the semi-finals and final of the tournament, which is scheduled to be played between 1st and 4th march.
Shaji Prabhakaran's words
Following the announcement of the fixtures, AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran held a press conference, in which he said the following.
"This is a great moment for Indian football, as the four states that make it to the semifinals will get to fight for the Santosh Trophy title in Saudi Arabia. The battle for the last four is likely to be an intense one, and we all hope that the fight will go down to the wire to book a spot on the international stage.”
"The Santosh Trophy is central to our plans in development of football across the country, as we look to improve the conditions for all our State FAs to make bigger contributions in taking Indian football forward.”
With the first matchday of the tournament having already been played on the 10th of February, last year’s winners Kerela won in the opening game against Goa. The other games included draws being played between Odisha and Maharashtra, and Punjab and Karnataka.
