The FIFA Club World Cup is kicking off in Morocco, with Real Madrid heavily favoured to continue European football’s stranglehold on the competition. Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders will be in the mix, as will Brazilian giants Flamengo, along with Wydad from Morocco, who are the tournament hosts. Real Madrid are the most successful team in the tournament since its inception. FIFA Club World Cup began in 2000 as FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil. It ran parallel to the Intercontinental Cup, a club competition between Europe and South American champions before both tournaments merged. It was rechristened as FIFA Club World Cup in 2006.
This is going to be one of the last FIFA Club World Cups. When it's going to be played under its current format of seven teams. The governing body's president Gianni Infantino earlier announced during the World Cup last year. The FIFA Club World Cup will change to an elaborate format of 32 teams in 2025.
FIFA Club World Cup runs a seven-team format with reigning champions of that year's AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North, Central America and Caribbean), CONMEBOL Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania) and UEFA Champions League (Europe), and the host nation's national champions, compete in a knock-out tournament.
The 19th edition of the Club World Cup brings together the respective champions of each of FIFA’s six premier regional competitions. Alongside the host nation’s league champions. Joining Real Madrid in this year’s tournament are sides from Morocco, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Brazil and the United States.
