Premier League clubs dominate the list

The January transfer window has officially shut, and in complete honesty, this one month was a completely wild ride. From seeing an extravagant Todd Boehly and Chelsea spend an astounding amount of money on top world class talents, to an extraordinary deadline day, where drama was abundant, as we got to see some of the most unexpected signings, this transfer window had it all.

The transfer window also saw Cristiano Ronaldo make a switch away and join Saudi Arabian club Al Nassar, and also saw the drama of World Cup stars being sought after desperately by clubs attempting to bolster their squad going into the final half of the season.

Most clubs attempted to make this window worthwhile and beneficial for the squad, and in the quest of this feat, their have been some heavy hitters, who have spent like no other club. So let’s take look at the biggest spending clubs from this year’s January transfer window.

10. Marseille - €35 million

Marseille are the only team outside of the Premier League, to make the top ten list. Les Minots have spent a total of €35 million in January. The club were able to sign top Brazilian talent Vitinha, who was brought on from Portuguese top-flight club Sporting Braga, for a transfer fee of 25 million Euros.

Other than that, Marseille acquired the services of Moroccan sensation and World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi for 8 million euros. Ukranian forward Malinovski was also signed on a loan deal.

9. Wolves – €38.5 million

Wolverhampton Wanders, are currently fighting relegation, as the club sits at 17th position in the points table. Things haven’t gone to plan for the Wanderers so far this season, as a result of which, the club spent lavishly in the transfer window.

A total of 38.5 million Euros was spent by Wolves, in return for which they welcomed João Gomes from Brazilian side Flamengo, Lemina from Nice, Pablo Sarabia from Paris Saint Germain and Craig Dawson from West Ham. Other signings included the purchase of Craig Dawson from Wesh Ham, and a loan deal for Matheus Cunha.

8. Leeds United - €41.2 million

Leeds are another club who are fighting for survival in the English top flight. The Whites are currently 15th in the Premier League and have spent a decent sum of 41 million Euros this window, in their quest for survival.

The Peacocks bought Hoffenheim forward Georginio Rutter for a fee of 28 million Euros and Maximilian Wober for 12 million Euros. Their most notable transfer of the window, was the transfer of Weston Mckennie, who has signed a loan deal with the club until the end of the season.

7. Liverpool - €42 million

Liverpool made a single signing in the entire January transfer window, but still made it to the top 10. Their staggering 42 million transfer of World Cup star Cody Gakpo from PSV, made the Reds one of the highest-spending clubs this winter.

The transfer was made in the light of Liverpool’s attacking concerns this season, which came in handy with Cody’s blistering World Cup campaign. Though the transfer had a lot of media attention, Cody has so far failed to impress in the Premier League and is yet to score for his new club.

6. Tottenham Hotspurs - €48 million

Tottenham had a pretty impressive January transfer window. The North London-based club were able to acquire the services of two extremely talented players in their fight for the top-four spot.  The total amount spent by the club was 48 million Euros.

The two signings made by the club are Portuguese midfielder Pedro Porro, who has signed from Sporting Lisbon on £5m loan with £39m obligation to buy in the summer, and Danjuma, who has signed a loan deal until the end of the season.

5. Newcastle United - €49.3 million

Third place Newcastle have spent just around 50 million euros this winter. The club spent most of it’s transfer fee on Anthony Gordon, who was signed from Everton for 45 million Euros. Other than that, Harrison Ashby was brought to the club from West Ham in a 3.5 million dollar deal.

 4. Bournemouth FC - €56.2 million

Bournemouth spent heavily this transfer window. The Cherries are currently in a dire position in the league, and have thus spent heavily on transfers, in the hope that they make necessary changes in their team that can help them in their relegation battle.

The club’s most expensive inclusion was Ukrainian defender Ilya Zabarnyi, who was signed for 22.7 million Euros, Dango Outtara was also signed from Lorient for 22.5 million Euros. Bournemouth also spent 10.3 million Euros in the signing for Antoine Semenyo from Bristol City.

3. Arsenal FC – €60.3 million

Table toppers Arsenal, are having a truly exceptional season. The Gunners are en route of lifting their first Premier League title since their invincible triumph in 2004. The cub spent dearly on signing players, that could help them take the final leap towards that glorious Premier League title.

Arsenal’s winter signings include Kiwior, Trossard and Jorginho, who were all signed for transfer fees of 25 million, 24 million and 11.3 million Euros respectively. All these players are extremely talented, and will surely give a boost to Arsenal’s squad.

2. Southampton FC – €65.25 million

Currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League, Southampton have shocked everyone with their incredible transfer window. The Saints are having a horrific season, as they are currently in the drop zone, and are looking at possible Championship football next season. To avoid this awful fate, The Saints have frittered away quite a sum, to bring in better players, and improve their condition.

Kamaldeen Sulemana was the club’s biggest transfer, as he was bought from Rennes for a transfer fee of 25 million Euros. Genk were also paid 18 million, in exchange of Paul Onuachu. Further, Carlos Alcraz was given a call, and he joined the club fot 13.7 million Euros. Other sigings for the Saints include Mislav Orsic and James Bree, for whom the club paid 5.8 million Euros, and 900,000 Euros respectively.

1. Chelsea FC – €328 million

Chelsea have been the busiest club in the January transfer window after securing eight new incomings. For these eight signings, the Blues paid a total of 328 million Euros, which is an absolutely astounding figure. The Blues have broken all records and have spent 260 million more than any other club.

The club signed world cup winner Enzo Fernandez on deadline day, for a Premier League record fee of €121million. Also, Mykhailo Mudryk was bought for 70 million euros. Other key signings include Malo Gusto, Noni Madueke, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos. Chelsea also welcomed Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season.
